JOB DETAILS:

Role Title:Driver - IPALSE

Safeguarding level:
Level 1: This post will have no direct contact/access to children and vulnerable adults. The post holder will be expected to have a full commitment to uphold VSO safeguarding policy at all times. As part of our safer recruitment practice, a criminal background check will be obtained for the post holder prior to the start date.

Purpose:
To provide transport services for VSO staff and volunteers in an efficient, safe, and timely manner, and maintain the assigned vehicle in a neat and good condition to support project activities.

Responsibilities:
• Drive staff, volunteers, and other authorised passengers in an efficient, safe, and timely manner.
• Check the vehicle condition regularly (oil, water, battery, tyres, licence, insurance, etc.).
• Maintain the vehicle in a clean, neat, and mechanically sound condition for the comfort and safety of its passengers.
• Deliver goods, packages, and information as authorised.
• Plan safe routes for travel and ensure the vehicle is fuelled prior to the planned travel.
• Log all journeys and maintain a record of all fuel and repair costs.
• Record and maintain travel logs and ensure proper filing of related documents.
• Prepare and submit the required vehicle reports as needed.
• Maintain and use the VSO vehicle in compliance with the Vehicle Policy and other related VSO policies.
• Report any minor or major incidents with the vehicle (e.g., fines, accidents, thefts) at the earliest and follow due process.
• Use reasonable and safe driving practices at all times and under any circumstances.
• Observe the traffic rules and regulations and speed limits as prescribed.

Collaboration Responsibilities:
Will work closely with:
• The Programme Implementation Lead
• The Project Manager
• The Procurement and Operations Officer
• The Finance and Operations team
• The Project team (staff and volunteers)

Competence Required:
Essential Knowledge/Qualifications:
• At least O’Level (UCE Certificate).
• Defensive Driving Training/Certification.
• First Aid training is an added advantage.

Experience:
• At least 3 years’ driving experience, preferably with experience driving long distances.
• Practical experience working in a remote operation setting.
• Possession of a relevant and valid driving permit.
• Mechanical knowledge.
• Knowledge of safe road usage and traffic guidelines.

Skills/Abilities:
• Can speak and write English. Knowledge of a local language in the assigned region is an added advantage.
• Comply with VSO policies, procedures, and guidelines as well as relevant laws and requirements.
• Good knowledge of Uganda Traffic Laws and Regulations.
• Ability to work independently.
• Focused with a flexible attitude, resilience, and adaptability skills.
• Highly skilled in driving both manual and automatic vehicles.
• In-depth knowledge of checking vehicles for problems and performing preemptive maintenance.
• Ability to demonstrate a high level of professionalism to staff, volunteers, and passengers.
• Ability to provide a secure environment for passengers, staff, volunteers, and the employer while in transit.
Other Duties:
• Fulfil other appropriate level responsibilities as defined by the line manager from time to time.
• Abide by VSO core values and other VSO policies regarding safeguarding, gender sensitivity, child protection, the Data Protection Act, anti-bribery, confidentiality, and security.
