The African Crane Conservation Programme (ACCP) , a partnership between the international Crane Foundation and Endangered Wildlife Trust, aims to have stable wild populations of the four threatened crane species resident to sub-Saharan Africa (Wattled, Blue, Grey Crowned, and Black Crowned Cranes). Moving towards the lCF/EWT strategic vision for 2025, three regional manager positions will be established, namely Southern Africa, East Africa and West & Central Africa Regional Managers. The second of these positions is the ACCP East Africa Regional Manager. This position will be based with NatureUganda in Kampala, Uganda and will be jointly managed by the CF/EWT Partnership and NatureUganda.

We are looking for a dynamic, committed and confident person to lead the strategic planning, management and implementation of the ICF/EWT Partnerships strategy in East Africa. The person will be responsible for the operational management and the fulfillment of the strategy for the East African region, working on behalf of the Grey Crowned Crane occurring in the region and the grasslands, wetlands and catchments on which they depend. This East African Regional Manager will drive an approach that integrates science with conservation action; secures cranes in the region; improves the protected status of key sites; improves the ecological integrity of key sites and their catchments; addresses and incorporates community needs and livelihoods at each of the key crane sites; provides education opportunities to achieve the ACCP objectives. The person will also work strategically both within in Uganda and regionally, exploring opportunities for collaboration and the development of partnerships and strong networks that contribute to the ACCP objectives

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Provide input into the ACCP and NatureUganda strategies and develop, monitor and annually review the ACCP: East Africa strategy and associated documentation. o Provide leadership and overall direction and coordination for all conservation activities, and facilitate and support the delivery of conservation targets within the East African region.
  • Compile an annual ACCP: East Africa report and oversee the development and monitoring of annual work plans, project management plans and individual action plans.
  • Supervise the Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda Country Coordinators, and ensure adequate coordination of all projects and activities with ACCP partners in East Africa. t
  • Ensure that the skills and capacity available for projects are adequate to fulfill the strategy, which includes the fostering of staff by upskilling, leading, mentoring and supervising.
  • Overall accountability for the financial sustainability of the ACCP: East African projects, including budget development, monitoring and management; the development and implementation of a fund raising strategy; and appropriate and relevant donor servicing, in collaboration with the ICF, EWT and NatureUganda fundraising teams.
  • Formulate and prioritize relevant research and conservation projects across East Africa.
  • Oversee the data base management for the ACCP, and manage specifically data from the East African projects.
  • Lobby nationally in Uganda and regionally to achieve species and habitat conservation objectives.
  • Actively seek opportunities to gain exposure for the work of the East African projects, and represent the lCF/EWT Partnership and NatureUganda at appropriate local, regional and international meetings.
  • Provide inputs to communications products/campaigns to ensure that accurate information is published to promote the image of the programme, organisation and conservation activities.
  • Develop and maintain a network of partners and experts and actively seek to build strategic alliances with other relevant organisations and / or individuals to promote and implement the goals of the ACCP generally and more specifically the ACCP: East Africa region.
  • Assist with the implementation of the AEWA International Single Species Action Plan for Grey Crowned Cranes in the region and the National Action Plan for Grey Crowned Cranes in Uganda.
  • Ensure at least one-peer reviewed publication is produced annually from the East African region.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a four year degree in the natural sciences or other relevant field.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a relevant field and a proven track record in management.
  • Strong management and supervisory skills, including an ability to provide oversight and mentorship to staff.
  • Understanding of wetland ecosystems and knowledge of tools to monitor the ecosystem services and species, and ability to analyse data.
  • The ability to network effectively, and collaborate with partners, stakeholders, and staff at all levels of organizations, including the free sharing of information and technical expertise as needed.
  • Attentive to detail and thoroughness.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills including the ability to effectively write reports or develop strategic plans..
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programmes, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Competency in GIS and spatial analyses.
  • Flexibility to work the number and schedule of hours needed to accomplish regular and ad hoc job responsibilities.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, and suitable driving experience.
  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally, spending time in other countries in Africa at least 10 times a year.

REMUNERATION
Remuneration is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
