JOB DETAILS:

Job Summary:
To ensure that the health status of the population is improved through provision of better health services as well as conducting field visits to hospitals, Health Centers, homes and communities for sensitization, counseling, follow-up and assessments.
The psychiatric nurse will work with community mental health facilities in managing caseloads and will be actively involved in providing teaching to Persons of Concern, staff, and interns through Continuous Medical Education and Morning Addresses.
To ensure success as a psychiatric nurse, you must exercise empathy and resilience. Ultimately, you will continuously enhance your psychiatric skillset to strengthen your service provision.

Duties/Responsibilities
• Screen new arrivals and self-settled refugees to establish if they have any psychiatric emergencies.
• Conducting targeted mental health education, particularly within families.
• Work with the Medical coordinator and pharmacy personnel to ensure that the supply of drugs and medical equipment required for running the clinic is continuous and on time.
• Administering Psychiatric medications and similar medications as well as monitoring adherence to non-medicinal treatment regimens.
• Ensure maintenance of records such as Drug stock cards, Daily consumption cards, Treatment records, Referral records, Equipment register, Monthly drug consumption reports, Health unit reports, Medical counseling records on individual files.
• Ensure timely transportation of mentally ill patients to hospitals and back to the settlements for referrals.
• Ensure timely issuance of prescribed drugs to patients as well as arranging appointment for the Psychiatric doctor and Psychologist to make psychiatric assessment for refugees and asylum seekers.
• Assist the public Health associates and counselors in conducting psychiatric education talks, dialogues for refugees/asylum seekers.
• Provide counseling on mental health issues to refugees/asylum seekers and project staff.
• Ensure proper and timely requisition for medical investigations for patients and subsistence for admitted cases.
• Carry out hospital visits and follow up on both out patients and admitted cases in Butabika Hospital and give update reports.
• Compile weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual medical reports.
• Identify cases that require psycho social interventions and responding to psychiatric emergencies in the refugee communities.
• Carry out other duties as assigned by the supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS
• A minimum of a diploma in Psychiatric Nursing from a recognized institution
• At least two years’ experience in similar position.
