Role Summary
The ESG Expert will provide technical leadership on integrating environmental and social sustainability considerations into the program’s MEL framework. The expert will develop monitoring tools, ensure compliance with relevant ESG standards, assess environmental and social risks, and contribute to reporting and adaptive learning processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement frameworks and tools for ESG monitoring, aligned with MEL objectives and donor standards.
- Identify and apply appropriate ESG indicators to track environmental and social impacts of interventions.
- Conduct regular assessments to monitor partner compliance with TMA’s environmental and social safeguards.
- Report on ESG risks and recommend mitigation measures.
- Ensure integration of ESG findings into MEL data analysis and program learning activities.
- Contribute ESG-related content to quarterly and annual reports.
- Provide technical support on sustainability issues to MEL team members and program stakeholders.
- Respond and help track ESG-related grievances or complaints raised during implementation.
- Collaborate with Gender, MEL, and Data Experts to ensure cohesive cross-cutting analysis.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Sustainable Development, or another related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of professional experience in environmental and social monitoring and compliance.
- Strong experience with ESG risk assessment in development programs, ideally in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, or trade.
- Demonstrated familiarity with international ESG standards (e.g., IFC Performance Standards, World Bank ESF, OECD).
- Experience working across African contexts.
- Solid understanding of environmental and social sustainability in development programming.
- Strong analytical and report writing skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to translate technical ESG concepts to diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary MEL team and with a range of stakeholders.
