Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda (WCUGU) is a nonprofit focused on promoting open knowledge through Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities to collaboratively create and share locally relevant content with open access, while our vision is to cultivate a Ugandan community that champions sustainable open knowledge creation and utilization.
We are seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead WCUGU, advancing our mission and vision by overseeing operations, driving strategic initiatives, and ensuring the organization's growth and sustainability.
Job Summary
The Executive Director (ED) is the key operational leader of WCUGU, responsible for translating the Board’s strategic vision into actionable outcomes. Reporting to the Board of Governors, the ED will oversee programs, fundraising, financial management, and community engagement while ensuring operational efficiency and alignment with WCUGU’s mission and strategic plan (2025-2029).
Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership & Management - Oversee staff, volunteers, and committees while fostering an inclusive work culture and ensuring operational excellence through effective policies and best practices.
2. Strategic Planning & Execution - Work closely with the Board to implement and monitor the strategic plan, ensuring alignment with WCUGU’s mission, vision, and objectives while identifying opportunities for growth and impact.
3. Program Development & Implementation - Lead and execute innovative programs to enhance Wikimedia content creation, community engagement, training, and advocacy, while measuring and reporting effectiveness through key performance indicators (KPIs).
4. Fundraising & Resource Mobilization - Develop and execute fundraising strategies to secure grants, sponsorships, and partnerships while cultivating relationships with local and international donors and stakeholders to ensure WCUGU's financial sustainability.
5. Financial & Administrative Management - Oversee budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, donor requirements, and reporting standards while providing regular financial reports and analysis to the Board.
6. Community & Stakeholder Engagement - Strengthen engagement with Wikimedia volunteers, editors, and partner organizations, while expanding outreach to educational institutions, government bodies, and corporate partners, and fostering an inclusive and diverse Wikimedia community in Uganda.
7. Board Relations & Governance - Maintain open communication with the Board, providing updates on operations and strategic matters, supporting Board meetings and governance best practices, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulations.
8. Public Relations & Advocacy - Represent WCUGU at national and international forums, conferences, and media engagements, advocating for Wikimedia’s mission and values, while strengthening WCUGU’s visibility and brand positioning.
Qualifications & Experience
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Development Studies, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field.
• Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in a nonprofit organization, NGO, or volunteer-driven entity.
• Strong fundraising track record, including grant writing, donor engagement, and resource mobilization.
• Demonstrated experience in managing volunteers and community-driven programs, with proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans and oversee program implementation.
• Strong financial management skills, excellent public speaking, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement abilities, and a solid understanding of Wikimedia projects, open knowledge, and digital literacy are highly valued.

• Salary: 5M UGX gross per month.
