We partner with remote and rural communities where children are leaving school without vital basic skills. Our unique approach then helps parents and teachers to create sustainable, effective schools and to nurture their children's learning. For over 20 years we have ensured vulnerable children in Uganda get the right infrastructure, teaching and family support so they can get the most from their time at school and go on to lead productive, healthy and happy lives. Every child deserves a good education.

Build Africa currently works in 13 districts in Uganda with its field programs coordinated through two Area offices located in Kumi and Masindi. We therefore seek to recruit suitably qualified persons for the position below.

Head of Programme (1 position- Based in Kampala with frequent visits to field program areas)

The job holder will report directly to the Country Director and will be responsible for the Area Programme Managers and all Kampala programme staff. He/ she will be accountable tor strengthening and overseeing Build Africa Uganda's (BAU‘s programme strategies. program quality, programme delivery partnerships and accountability in accordance with organisational and donor policies. The job holder will also be responsible for providing technical assistance, direction. support and oversight for total quality coordinating and supporting the design of new innovative programmes and defining BAU‘s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) framework As is member of BAU‘s senior management team, the post holder will play a key role in the overall management, leadership and direction at EAU, acting as a role model to staff. He/she will manage the BAU programme implementation team and convene the quarterly programme review meetings for the program sector. He/she will also ensure submission of high quality proposals and overall systems for programme design, MEL systems and project implementation tools are in place within the country programme. He/she will manage project budget lines in accordance with the financial scheme of delegation. He/she will ensure that programme staff has the skills, capacities and knowledge to effectively manage and deliver project deliverables.

Person Specifications

  • Minimum of a relevant Master's degree from a recognized University with at least 6 years demonstrated experience in implementing development projects.
  • Experience working with an international NGO, implementing education, livelihood, child protection and gender programs an added advantage.
  • Comfortable working in an environment that espouses thinking outside the box, constantly questioning the status quo and continuously improving programs.
  • Track record of developing and managing projects which create measurable, cost- effective impact.
  • Experience of developing, maintaining and overseeing project design, monitoring and evaluation frameworks and key performance indicators.
  • Comfortable working in an advisory capacity with no supervisory control over project staff, and therefore having to work with and convince field staff rather than telling them what to do.
  • Willingness and interest to spend scheduled and regular time in each programme location
  • A person of high integrity that will follow BAU‘s core values and adhere to a zero tolerance on waste and corruption
  • Practical hands-on field background.
  • A track record of developing and managing projects which create measurable, cost effective impact.
  • A passion to think out of the ‘development’ box.
  • Strong in statutory fundraising.
  • Experience of developing, maintaining and overseeing project design, monitoring and evaluation frameworks and key performance indicators.
  • Good coach, able to train staff.
  • Excellent written communication skills, particularly proposal writing and reporting.
  •  Ability to achieve maximum results with limned resources
