JOB DETAILS:
• Rikolto is an international network organisation with over 40 years of experience in partnering with food chain stakeholders in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. We build bridges of trust and trade between the food industry, governments, research institutions, financial institutions and farmers’ organisations around one central question: ‘What will we eat tomorrow?’
• Urbanization is one of the key drivers of change in the world today. The world’s urban population currently stands at around 3.5 billion. It will almost double to more than 6 billion by 2050. This is a challenge not only for urban areas but also for rural areas, because many people, especially the young, will migrate from rural areas to urban areas over this period. When addressing urbanization challenges, we are also addressing, directly or indirectly, rural and territorial development. What do we have to do to ensure peoples access to good nutrition in cities? What do we have to do to produce enough food for urban dwellers? What infrastructures are needed and what kind of food production is possible in cities? How can cities preserve the services of the surrounding ecosystems? (FAO,2018). A very wide range of important issues links urbanization and consumption of healthy, sustainable and nutritious (HSN) food for all city-dwellers.
• Our ambition is to catalyze collective action among local food system actors (local and national authorities, food retailers and distributors, producers, citizens, thematic experts, financial institutions and civil society organisations) to make urban food environments and food supply chains more conducive to healthy, sustainable and nutritious diets for all citizens as part of resilient and inclusive city region food systems in Mbale, Gulu and Kampala cities. We hope to affect change in three domains:
1. Healthy and nutritious food is produced in an efficient and sustainable way (sustainable food production)
2. Urban food markets are inclusive of smallholder producers, vulnerable citizens, the youth and women (inclusive markets).

• This position requires interest and expertise in sustainable youth entrepreneurship, urban food systems, sustainable crop production, M&E, inclusive business models, Cooperative governance, as well as other issues such as climate change, urban planning, and supply chain management.
