Title: Laboratory Technician
Grade: GL-5

Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationship
This position is located in the Medical Section in Entebbe. The Laboratory technician works under the guidance of the OIC of Medical Unit and direct supervision of the Head Nurse

Duties and Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Laboratory Technician will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Clinical duties
• Perform laboratory test as required by Doctors.
• Ensure safety of the patients in performance of duty.
• Communicate with patients and update the doctors in the clinic.
• Provide in training for nurses and doctors on use of simple laboratory kits and equipment.
• Plans and Organizes preventive medical campaigns.
• Refer staff to outside laboratories as required.
• Coordinate and liaise with other clinical laboratories to provide laboratory services.
• Be available whenever called for emergency duties.
• Dispose/incinerate utilized chemicals, tubes, reagents and all utilized laboratory consumables in a standard way.
• Sample taking and testing for COVID-19, handling of PCR test machines

2. Medico-administrative duties
• Perform laboratory test for the external & internal Quality Control System.
• Evaluate, identify and recommend purchase of laboratories supplies and equipment.
• Make sure that adequate supply of laboratory reagents, supplies and equipment are available.
• Ensure that regular laboratory equipment service and maintenance is carried out regularly.
• Keep records and monthly statistics.

3. General
• Perform all related duties as required
• Maintain patient’s records and secure confidentiality.
• Collects and collates articles for clinic newsletter

4. Work implies frequent interaction with the following
• Staff at the base; staff within work unit; staff form MONUSCO and neighboring missions.
• Private laboratories.
• Quality control provider for the laboratory.
• Laboratory equipment service providers.

5. Result expected
High quality of laboratory services.
All assigned tasks will be undertaken with utmost confidentiality. Breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action against the staff member.

Qualifications
Education
High School diploma or equivalent diploma in Laboratory Studies/ Techniques is required. National registration and license is required.

Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a full-service laboratory or related area is required.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required
