Holy Family Virika Hospital (“Virika Hospital”) is a Private, Not for Profit, community hospital owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal. The Hospital is accredited to the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau. It is a 205 bed capacity hospital located in Kabarole District in western Uganda in East Africa. The Hospital offers outpatient and inpatient services including paediatric, medical, surgical, emergency and maternity.
Virika Hospital’s mission is to promote life to the full by providing quality and equitable health care to all persons without discrimination and to train high standard health care providers in accordance with the mission of Christ.

Job Title: Medical Director (MD)
Reports To: Board of Directors
Appointing Authority: Board of Directors
Responsible for: For all staff through Departmental Heads.
Job Purpose
To head the Senior Management team of the Hospital and provide strategic leadership in developing, reviewing, monitoring, and implementation of policies, plans, strategies and programmes and effectively supervise and facilitate coordinated implementation of the Corporate strategy of the Hospital for an effective, efficient and affordable delivery of quality health care services.
Supervisees
All members of the Hospital Management team, all medical personnel in the hospital, Allied Health Professionals directly and indirectly and with specific regards for the respect of policies, norms, standards and regulations.
Special Requirements
It is most desirable that the function of Medical Director in virtue of the conflict of interests that may arise in the course of duty should be exercised by an employee free from bonds with other administrations / employers. Private Practice of the profession is not compatible with the post. .
Key Functions
• Develop high quality strategies and plans by ensuring their alignment with short-term and long-term objectives of the Hospital.
• Shall be the Medical Director of Holy Family Virika Hospital responsible for overall operations of the Hospital.
• Shall be responsible for Management team members and the overall responsibility of the management of the hospital and corporate accountability to the board of governors.
• Shall be responsible for coordinating all medical staff and Allied Health Professionals.
• Shall be the spokesperson of the hospital particularly on the medical-legal issues.
• Shall retain all duties and functions of a specialist doctor in the Hospital.
• Shall be the Chairman of the Hospital Management team.
• Is the chief Professional Advisor to the BOD on all medical matters
• Perform any other duties assigned by Supervisor or Board of Directors from time to time.
• Lead and motivate subordinates to advance employee engagement and develop a high performing managerial team.
• Ensure effective and efficient Coordination, streamlining and harmonization of operations.
• Enforce adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies and procedures that maintain the Hospital’s legality and business ethics.
• Review all financial and non-financial reports to devise solutions or improvements.
• Build Hospital relations with key partners and stakeholders and act as a point of contact for important stakeholders.
• Analyse risks and guide formulation of appropriate mitigation measures that ensure hospital’s growth.
• Enforcing timely Planning and budgeting for the Hospital;
• Enforcing the Professional and Service Codes of Conduct and Ethics;
• Carrying out human resource management functions like identifying manpower needs, training, promotional, leave, deployment and appraisal.
• Ensuring adherence to National Health Service delivery standards.
• Responsible for the operationalization of all policies and guidelines.
• Coordinating the provision Continuous Professional Development.
• Ensuring Preparing and submitting of periodic reports to relevant authorities.
• Any other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors from time to time.
Person Specifications
• M.B.Ch.B or BDS or its equivalent from a recognized University/Institution.
• Master’s degree in any relevant discipline is a must.
• A Postgraduate Diploma in Health Services Management or Public Administration Management from a recognized institution is an added advantage.
• Must be registered and licensed with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.

Five (5) years working experience in health services management.
