Description and purpose:
MUJHU Care is implementing a US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded birth defects surveillance project currently established in four major hospitals in Kampala, Uganda. The project aim is to determine the baseline prevalence of selected major external birth defects. This project also includes a nested case-control study to examine the association of maternal exposures to birth defects. MUJHU also plans to do a phased coverage scale-up of the surveillance to regional referral hospitals, and to investigate for cause of birth defects. MUJHU is seeking a candidate for the position of Medical Officer on this project.
The successful candidate will be stationed at the MUJHU offices in Mulago, but will have regular visits to the major hospitals, and other hospitals when added.
Required qualifications and profile:
A degree in Medicine (MBChB) with at least 2 years post internship. The desired person must be able and willing to learn quickly, multitask, have strong documentation skills and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. The successful candidate shall also have a passion for client care and to contribute to impactful research which improves health and wellbeing. Superior qualifications relevant to the position represent an advantage with expanded opportunities for career growth. Current professional accreditation and research related certification required (HSP/GCP). Clinical research and capacity building experience will be an added advantage. The successful candidate should be willing to travel to various in-country sites/hospitals.
The holder of this position will work under the direct supervision of the assigned Program Manager with guidance from the Principal Investigator and Clinic Division Director, and will be responsible for the following duties:
• To conduct bedside examination of births identified with birth defects and provide their mothers/caretakers information about the diagnosis.
• Coordinate the panel of experts to review and confirm the identified birth defects.
• Participate in development and revision of the project protocol and related documents.
• Train hospital staff on the project protocol including new examination, diagnosis and coding of birth defects.
• Participate in project data collection, and data quality management in accordance with GCP.
• Participate in the dissemination of project/study findings.
• Participate in any other related duties reasonably assigned by the relevant authorities.
