Post Title: ECTAD Uganda – National Animal production and value chain analysis expert
Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda
Type of Contract: Service Contract (SC)
Expected Start Date: January 2017
Duration of the assignment: Until 30 June 2017 (with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds)

General Description of task(s) and objectives to be achieved
Within the framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAD) Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Disease Operations (ECTAD), under the overall supervision of the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO)/Chief, Animal Health Service (AGAH)/. the functional, administrative and programmatic supervision of the FAD Representative in Uganda, and the direct supervision of the EGTAD Country Team Leader in Uganda, Ltd collaboration with the ECTAD Regional Team for East Africa and the ECTAD Uganda team, the incumbent will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the implementation of desktop and field activities on livestock value chain analysis at the livestock-wildlife-human interface, 
  • Coordinate the implementation of desktop and field activities on socio-anthropological, land use and agro-ecological tone mapping at the livestock-wildlife-human interface 
  • In close collaboration with GIS experts, map Agro-ecological risk factors for viruses that include: land use, animal management, and climate variables; 
  • Facilitate closer linkages of the EPT-2 program with relevant Ministries and other partners; 
  • Assist in the organization of planned technical meetings, and training workshops; 
  • Participate in in-country expert missions; 
  • Provide technical contributions to development of regular programme at FAO-Uganda; 
  • Contribute to the preparation of regular reports on the progress of the implementation of projects implemented by the ECTAD Uganda 
  • Perform other related duties as required. 

 

Academic qualifications, experience and required competencies

  • Advanced University Degree in animal production /animal science/animal health/range management 
  • Postgraduate training and relevant experience in farming systems and livestock value chain analysis as a basis of designing development programmes and mitigation of negative impacts 
  • Working knowledge of English. 

 

Required Competencies: 

  • Good skills in design of cross-sectional surveys, data collection methodologies and analytical skills such as use of statistical software 
  • Systematic document review and analysis 
  • Structuring and drafting skills to make information accessible and meaningful to expected users 
  • Working knowledge of risk modelling is an added advantage
