Lighthouse Trust is a registered Public Trust established to manage Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and provide leverage for leadership and delivery of integrated HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services in Malawi. Lighthouse has been involved in the development of locally applicable HIV care and treatment models. It is strategically positioned in Malawi’s National HIV response due to its close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH). The Lighthouse in close coordination with MoH operates integrated services at Kamuzu and Bwaila Hospitals in Lilongwe, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre and many districts within the central and northern region. Its strategic approach focus on client-centred care based on four goals which are:-


Goal 1: Service delivery: to enhance high-quality, integrated HIV
Prevention, treatment, care and support services for adults and children


Goal 2: Model interventions and operations research: to develop, pilot, evaluate, and disseminate innovative programs and policies across the continuum of prevention, treatment, care and support for HIV infection and its co-morbidities, both infectious and non-infectious.


Goal 3: Quality management: to ensure that all patients at LH clinics and all supported sites are receiving quality health care and services as recommended the MOH and other health development partners by utilizing quality improvement (QI) methodologies in a multidisciplinary team approach.


Goal 4: Capacity strengthening: to build and strengthen healthcare capacity for high quality HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services


Lighthouse Trust with support from the United States of America President’s Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through a Cooperative Agreement with Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has two grants to operate a Center of Excellence for Comprehensive Integrated HIV Care and Treatment Services in Lilongwe, Malawi (Grant #1NU2GGH002131) and also to achieve HIV Epidemic Control through scaling up of Quality Testing, Care and Treatment in sites outside Lilongwe (Grant # 1NU2GGH002003). Through these grants, Lighthouse would like to fill up various positions aimed at supporting establishment of a Centre of Excellence for HIV Management at Tisungane Clinic at Zomba Central Hospital and strengthening service delivery support in Lilongwe, Malawi.


NUTRITIONIST (1 POSITION)
Position Title : Nutritionist (Quote Ref N1)
Reports to : Clinic Manager
Department : Clinic
Location : Lighthouse Lilongwe


Purpose of the Position:
Helping to advance an understanding of how diet affects the health and well-being of people & to provide nutritional counselling and support.


Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to):

  • Lead and supervise staff involved in the management of acute malnutrition and nutritional counselling in Lighthouse clinics
  • Counselling clients who have acute malnutrition or at risk of developing malnutrition (both undernutrition and overweight).
  • Mobilize therapeutic and supplementary feeds and Nutrition assessment equipment for Lighthouse clinics.
  • Support the Nutrition programme development and planning.
  • Conduct situation analysis of program sectors for development, design and management of nutrition related programmes/projects.
  • Research and report on nutrition development trends for higher management use to enhance programme management, efficiency and delivery of results.
  • Nutrition programme management, monitoring and delivery of results.
  •  Work closely and collaboratively with internal and external colleagues and partners to discuss operational and implementation issues, provide solutions, recommendations and alert the Lighthouse Senior Management and stakeholders for higher Nutrition level interventions and/or decision.
  • Keep record of reports and assessments for easy reference and capture lessons learned.
  • Technical and operational support to Nutrition programme implementation.
  • Conduct Nutrition programme visits to Lighthouse Prototype sites and exchange information with partners/stakeholders to assess progress and provide technical support, take appropriate action to resolve issues and/or refer to relevant officials for solution.
  • Develop Nutrition education and counselling materials such as job aids and training materials for adults, children and adolescents living with HIV.
  • Organize nutrition trainings for mentors of adolescents living with HIV/AIDS across Lighthouse supported sites.
  • Represent Lighthouse Trust in National Nutrition meeting such as Nutrition Cluster Coordination meetings, Targeted Nutrition Programme technical working group and Nutrition Care Support and Treatment (NCST) technical working group.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor and entire Lighthouse management

Qualification Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in human nutrition or food Science or closely related field from a recognized university with at least 3 years of work experience in relevant health and nutrition programs.
  • Training in management of acute malnutrition (CMAMA and NCST) will be an added advantage.
  • Wide work experience in areas such as nutrition and health or similar.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the health care delivery system in Malawi, particularly the CMAM and NCST programming.
  • Significant experience managing programme, financial, operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, planning, coordination, and facilitation skills.
  • Extensive experience of targeting, HIV/AIDS and working with disadvantaged people in Malawian society
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Chichewa, including excellent English report writing skills and high attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and meet tight and competing deadlines.
  • Well-refined people management, team working and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong respect and empathy clients; as well as an affinity to Light House’s mission and values of integrity, dignity, and environmental respect.
