Job details:
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) is implementing a project to establish the National Farmers’ Leadership Centre (NFLC) at Kampiringisa in Mpigi District. The project which started in 2011 is funded by a bilateral grant from the Republic of Korea through the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Construction of buildings and other infrastructure is almost completed and the equipping the centre with requisite equipment and materials is on-going. Based on the Korean experience, NFLC focuses on mind-set change training for Agricultural leaders, community leaders and the political and civic leaders for the overall rural transformation.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industry and Fisheries, wishes to invite suitably qualified Ugandan citizens to fill the following vacant positions at the National Farmers‘ Leadership Centre (NFLC)

POST- LIVESTOCK TECHNICIAN
Number of vacancies: One (1)
Salary Scale: Attractive
Age: 21 years and above
Reports to: Principal

The incumbent will be responsible to the Principal in performing the following duties:
Duties and responsibilities:

  • Training farmer trainees on advanced and appropriate livestock production technologies;
  • Setting and establishment of livestock technology demonstrations for training;
  • Participate in development of work plans and budgets for livestock department;
  • Diagnosis of diseases, Identification and treatment of sick animals at NFLC;
  • Organize, manage and supervise the routine / day-to-day activities in the livestock farming units (Poultry, Piggery and Dairy) including spraying, disinfecting pens, barns and poultry houses, both individually and in a team;
  • Provide relevant advice, recommendations, solutions and appropriate options within the area of livestock production;
  • Carry out artificial insemination in livestock farms to ensure production of high quality animal breeds.
  • In addition, carry out animal pregnancy diagnosis, assess whether mated animals are pregnant and how far along their gestation periods;
  • Vaccinate farm animals and administer treatments to sick animals as well as monitor and care for the animals according to the farm's animal health plan;
  • Design and maintain quality control, production and other relevant farm records;
  • Formulate and implement appropriate animal feeding programs and advise management on alternative quality animal feeds;
  • Implement farm safety and bio-security procedures for livestock farms;
  • Responsible for routine maintenance of equipment and machinery used in livestock production such as hatcheries, milking machines etc;
  • Prepare and ensure proper packaging of livestock farm produce such as meat, chicken, raw milk, and eggs for distribution and sale;
  • Participate when called upon in NFLC training programs through lectures and demonstrations;
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Principal of NFLC.

Academic qualifications,
Ugandan National holding a Bachelor Degree in Veterinary medicine from a recognized university or institution.

Work Experience
Applicants should have at least two (O2) years of relevant working experience in the field of Veterinary medicine or Animal Husbandry in Government or Private sector or from any reputable organization.

Applicants who will not hear from the Ministry upon completion of recruitment and selection exercise should consider themselves unsuccessful. All jobs are on contract basis for a period of one year, renewable based on satisfactory performance and includes a six months probationary period.
