JOB DETAILS:
About the Position
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the role of a Process Plant Operator and Laboratory in-charge. In this critical role, you will be responsible for overseeing and optimizing the operations of our process plant while managing laboratory activities to ensure timely and accurate sampling, assaying, product quality and compliance with industry standards. This is a hands-on role but with a high level of responsibility in managing the process plant test work and Laboratory operations.

Responsibility Overview
In addition to any other duties that may be assigned to you from time to time, the main job requirements include;
Process Plant Operations:
• Supervise and lead a team of operators and technicians in the safe and efficient operation of the process plant.
• Performing metallurgical and analytical test-work as per set procedures.
• Monitor daily plant operations, including production, equipment maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Implement and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance efficiency, safety, and environmental compliance.
• Collaborate with maintenance teams to schedule and execute equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and permits.
• Operate mobile equipment like forklifts or telehandlers during process plant and lab operations.
• Ensure plant operations like feed rate, reagent addition, flow rate etc. are as per the set KPI’s.
• Provide Feedback to the Metallurgical Team – formal and informal.

Laboratory Management:
• Manage and coordinate laboratory activities, including sample testing, data analysis, and reporting.
• Oversee a team of laboratory technicians and analysts, providing guidance and training as needed.
• Develop and maintain quality control procedures to ensure product quality with consistency.
• Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, ensuring their accuracy and reliability.
• Pre-operation inspection of equipment and report any issue to Metallurgical Team or to maintenance department concerned.
• Ensure work areas and equipment are kept tidy and organised.
• Performs all duties with a focus on safety, environmental stewardship, and best operating practices.
• Responsible for safe and effective handling of hazardous materials and waste.
• Prepare reports with reliable data.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor from time to time.

Main Accountabilities
Environmental and Safety Compliance:
• Adhere to environmental regulations and contribute to environmentally responsible operations.
• Implement the required test work programmes accurately and reliably as laid out by the Metallurgical team
• Implement the required laboratory analysis accurately and reliably as laid out by the Metallurgical team
• Managing the budget for the plant and laboratory operations, including controlling operating costs, optimizing resource allocation, and identifying cost-saving opportunities
• Participate in environmental monitoring and reporting activities as necessary.
• Implement safety, health/environmental procedures, and legislation including reporting of any incidents as appropriate.
• Managing inventory levels of chemicals, reagents and any rare earth products. This includes tracking inventory usage, ordering supplies as needed, and minimizing waste or losses.
• Ensuring that all plant and laboratory operations adhere to strict safety protocols and guidelines. This includes conducting safety inspections, promoting a culture of safety among team members, and addressing any safety concerns promptly.
• Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and best practices, ensuring the organization's compliance with all relevant laws and standards.
• Supervising and leading the technicians and assistants. This will include assigning tasks, providing training, conducting performance evaluations, and fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.

Education and Experience
• Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field. Bachelor’s degree an advantage.
• Proven experience in process plant operations and laboratory management, preferably in the mining industry.
• Strong drive to work with the team to complete tasks in the allocated time frame.
• Strong leadership and team management skills.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
• Knowledge of safety regulations, quality standards, and environmental compliance.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel and Word.
