Position Title: Program Coordinator, Gender and Health
Department: East Africa Ministry Teams (EAMT)
Reports to: East Africa Ministry Team Leader
Status: Full-time, salaried
Location: Kampala, Uganda with travels to Kenya and Tanzania

PURPOSE:
Support the design and implementation of regional and country community health and gender programs in East Africa. Provide technical assistance, strategic direction, grant and proposal writing and coaching support to the ministry team by integrating health and gender into holistic community programs with partner organizations throughout the regions. Program areas include HIV and AIDS, Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), nutrition, Water and Sanitation Health, community-based health care and gender justice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Core Responsibilities

  • Strengthen EAMT region’s response to community health programming in East Africa by providing technical advice, coaching, and training to the staff of partner organizations such that World Renews response will:
  • Improve quality of health programming to ensure alignment with accepted best practices in the field of global public health, as well as national health policy and strategies.
  • Utilize a Christian transformational educational approach
  • Be culturally sensitive while challenging communities to address unhealthy cultural practices within each context
  • Be economically sustainable by local communities to the greatest degree possible
  • Strengthen the ability of local churches, World Renew partner organizations and local community development organizations to address current health issues including the development of their organizational capacity (OCI) and community capacity (CCI)
  • Encourage good project management, proposal / grant writing, monitoring, evaluation and reporting to assure the best possible decision making by communities, churches, partner organizations, and World Renew
  • Scaling up of the regional health strategy and the broader primary and community-based health care approach in programming.
  • Represent EAMTI at health program cluster meetings, technical working group meetings, Ministry of Health meetings, and other relevant forums for providing support to staff and partners
  • Provide expertise, experience and guidance to staff and partners agencies in the region to ensure the best practices in gender analysis and gender
  • sensitive program approaches are used. This may include:
  • Advising staff and partners on gender analysis and program design in the planning stages of the project cycle.
  • Improve quality of gender programming by providing training, resources, and technical advice.
  • Promoting in-depth behavior change especially in addressing worldviews, values and cultural practices that affect gender justice and health related issues
  • Participate in the World Renew gender working group activities and meetings
  • Represent EAMTI at gender program cluster meetings, technical working group meetings, Ministry of Gender meetings, and other relevant forums for providing support to staļ¬ and partners
  • Prepare annual work plans with outcomes and impacts based on priorities of this position and World Renew‘s regional and overall strategies. will be done in consultation with the EAMT team leader and Country Consultants and DELTA team members as appropriate.
  • Help to identify high value and high potential fundraising and mobilization opportunities tor health and gender programs working in close collaboration with country teams, to ensure that new funding proposals are in accordance with country and global strategies and policies as well as donor requirements.
  • Evaluate and monitor progress of gender and health - related programs including indicators of success in collaboration with field staff and the development team
  • Team Activities
  • Participate in ministry team meetings to help the team develop its strategy and policies and to represent ministry team decisions and strategies in consultation relationships with other international and local partner organizations
  • Contribute to the refinement and growth of the MT strategy, encouraging alignment with the agency‘s long range plan

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will directly supervise at least two Project officers managing the MNCH program at two of World Renew’s partner agencies and may have periodic supervisory responsibility for interns and/or volunteer personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS: '

  • Mature Christian commitment and ability to work respectfully with various church denominations Demonstrated understanding and ability to work within the cultural contesting East Africa
  • Proven ability to implement, improve and integrate sustainable community development programs through consultation, coaching and training ‘ 1
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally with I community processes and linking agricultural, nutrition, health livelihood, WASH and gender issues
  • Competency in the use of internet/email and can produce documents (including spreadsheets), power point presentations, knowledge in Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) is an asset
  • Excellent English verbal and written skills necessary for communicating well with stakeholders (donors, partners, and staff, constituents, and research institutions) and writing grant proposal.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Swahili is an asset

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s in Public Health (MPH) with a gender bias (or a related field) preferred
  • Minimum 2-3 years of work experience in community health development or organizational consultation experience
  • Experience with integrated community-based health development programs and cross-cultural experience.
  • Experience with training, coaching and advising.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • About 20%, 40%, 40% of time respectively supporting Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda
  • Travel form 30% of the time with in East Africa
  • Living conditions with unreliable access to water and electricity and increased exposure to illness.
