- Job/Role Purpose:
- To support all VSO project teams to analyze and document safeguarding risks and their mitigating actions from project design through implementation, in line with current policy and guidance.
- To continuously build the capacity of project staff in their understanding of safeguarding as it relates to VSO people, programs, and partners.
- Safeguarding Level: Level 3 (Regular, direct, and unsupervised access to children and vulnerable adults; requires a criminal background check such as an Enhanced DBS check in the UK or equivalent).

Overview of the Role:
The Project Safeguarding Officer - Implementation plays a critical role in ensuring that VSO’s projects adhere to safeguarding standards to protect children, young people, and vulnerable adults. The officer works within the Global Implementation Team and collaborates with various stakeholders to assess risks, manage incidents, provide training, and maintain best practices in safeguarding across VSO’s global operations. This role requires a high level of responsibility, as it involves direct or supervisory access to vulnerable groups, and thus a thorough criminal background check is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities (Expanded):
- Safeguarding Risk Assessment and Action Planning
- Support for Teams: The officer assists project implementation teams in conducting detailed safeguarding risk assessments at the country, project, and partner levels. This involves identifying potential risks to children, young people, and vulnerable adults and creating actionable mitigation plans.
- Ongoing Guidance: They provide continuous advice to project teams on adapting these assessments and plans as project contexts change, ensuring that safeguarding measures remain relevant and effective.
- Collaboration: Works with project implementation teams, portfolio managers, and the global duty of care team (including safeguarding champions) to review and strengthen risk assessments, ensuring alignment with best practices and feeding insights into future project planning.
- Safeguarding Reporting & Incident Management
- Monitoring: The officer oversees the reporting and escalation of safeguarding incidents, ensuring that all concerns are documented and addressed promptly.

- Liaison and Networking

- Advisory Role: Provides advice on robust safeguarding practices, ensuring that VSO’s projects meet high standards of protection for vulnerable groups.
