HI in Uganda is currently implementing development and humanitarian interventions in six
sectors/thematic areas: Livelihood, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Physical and Functional Rehabilitation, Inclusive Education, Inclusive Health, and Inclusive Humanitarian Action (IHA) to improve access and quality of services to the most vulnerable people including persons with disabilities promoting a more inclusive and harmonious society.
Project Background
The Humanitarian Services for Very Vulnerable Persons aims to improve access to humanitarian services for very vulnerable persons, including Women and Men, Girls and Boys, with disabilities in Nakivale refugee settlement. The project will provide the most vulnerable refugees with physical and functional rehabilitation and mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS). It will be in Nakivale settlement, located in the Southwest of Uganda, is one of the three settlements including Kyangwali and Rwamanja receiving refugees arriving from the DRC. It is the Second to Ajumani, Kyangwali, 3rd as per UNHCR HH Data of June 2024. UGA – Active Population by Settlement – 30 Jun 2024.pd
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibility 1: Psychological assessment:
• In collaboration with Community Mobilizers at project sites, evaluate the needs of people identified with psychosocial and psychological issues using standardized assessment tools.
Responsibility 2: Providing mental health and psychosocial services:
• Answer to internal referrals for further psychological assessment and intervention.
• In collaboration with community mobilizers, provide psychological support at the individual / family level. This includes regular individual counselling, group counselling, and family counselling.
• Refer beneficiaries with specific needs of specialized psychological/psychiatric/ other support to external services and follow-up on all referrals.
• Conduct training internally and externally to community mobilizers, community leaders, and other actors on PFA and MHPSS support when needed under supervision of MHPSS TO.
• Conduct comprehensive psychological assessment
• Plan and implement community awareness activities and focus group discussions as directed by the project manager.
• Ensure daily quantitative and qualitative reporting in line with the project’s standard operating procedures.
• Report on a weekly basis about activities planned and implemented.
• Analyze and report on beneficiaries’ psychological and psychosocial status.
• Complete intake forms “assessment form, follow up form, discharge, and monitoring form” for the beneficiaries and manage beneficiary data according to data protection protocols
• Submit weekly and monthly reports to line manager.
• Compile any other reports upon request of the line manager.
• Respect and promote HI’s Policies and report to your line manager any non respect of HI’s policies amongst the teams or partners.
• Address needs and requests in a professional way.
• Report any incident or act that causes any harm to beneficiary or to others.
• Interact with children with the presence or/and permission of their parents or caregivers
• Respect beneficiary confidentiality. And always respect a refusal of treatment.
Responsibility 3: Demonstrate willingness to improve professional competences and abilities to increase care quality:
• Demonstrate motivation at work.
• Demonstrate willingness to improve own knowledge and skills by participating actively in any training sessions, capacity building activities.
• Participate in team activities, including trainings, meetings, and other events.
• Respect each team member’s positions, work, and specialty
• Adapt to special situations or demands from supervisor (reporting, etc) as they unfold
• Participate in educating other organizations and institutions on inclusion of persons with disability
• Maintain a positive image of Humanity and Inclusion at all times and in all circumstances
Responsibility 7: Emergency preparedness and response
• Contributes to the program’s emergency preparedness actions and, during an emergency, adapts his/her work modality to contribute to HI’s effective humanitarian response.
Responsibility 4: Respect of HI identity, values, rules and policies
• Know, understand, apply and respect HI code of conduct and ethics, HI mandate and values, HI rules and operating procedure, HI policies (child protection policy, policy and mechanism for the
• prevention of and fight against bribery, the protection of beneficiaries from sexual exploitation and abuse policy) and make sure they are known, understood, applied and respected by team
• Know, understand, apply and respect HI security rules and make sure they are known, understood and applied by team.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: Education & Experience
• Master’s degree in Clinical or counselling Psychology.
• At least 2 year of professional experience in an NGO or organization in emergency or postconflict setting
• At least 4 years of professional experience in psychology related work.
• Experience working in refugee context is an asset.
• Experience in Child health development projects
• Experience working with vulnerable groups, specifically persons with disabilities
• Experience in community-based psychosocial support and counseling
• Experience in the fields of inclusion / accessibility of services / services to persons with disabilities.
Personal Skills & Technical Competencies required
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating community trainings
• Willingness and ability to work among IDP, displaced populations
• Good knowledge of community mobilization methods and tools
• Fluency in English is preferred and fluency in local language is required. Knowledge of other languages in is an advantage.
• Ability to organize and prioritize workload and to cope with stress and high pressure
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team
• Ability to work with partners (local and international actors)
• Knowledge of the principles of referrals mechanisms and pathways
• Experience using MS Windows and MS Office packages (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) for reporting
• Knowledge of MHPSS and Disability Sectors: Understanding of the MHPSS and disability landscape in Uganda. And knowledge of Child Development: Understanding of child development stages and needs.
