About the position
Based at the Alliance office at Kawanda, Uganda, the Scientist – On-farm trial will ensure that the viability of multi-crop on-farm trial networks is assessed in close consultation with breeding programs and relevant service organizations in East Africa and that such networks are implemented in at least two countries.

Responsibilities
• Collect data through interviews, stakeholder consultations, and other means to assess the feasibility of implementing multi-crop on-farm trial networks.
• Document findings, opportunities, and possible issues in implementing the on-farm trial networks after assessment with breeding teams.
• Monitor the evolving experience of on-farm trial implementers and data users and document outcomes in coordination with the different work package leaders (adoption of the tricot approach and its effects on decision-making).
• Organize information sharing activities to support the 1000FARMS community of practice.
• Perform other tasks as determined by the project leader.
• Coordinate the implementation of on-farm trials in close cooperation with existing NARES-CGIAR breeding networks, such as the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA).
• Collaborate in training activities to extension agents (field agents) and trial coordinators, in close cooperation with the 1000FARMS Capacity Building work package.
• Represent the 1000FARMS Platform in interactions with key stakeholders.
• Develop and implement a stakeholder engagement strategy together with the 1000FARMS team as well as represent the 1000FARMS Platform in interactions with key stakeholders (E.g breeders, variety release committees).
• Lead the design of agreed rules to share seeds, resources and data between the stakeholders that constitute multi-crop on-farm trial networks.
Provide quarterly reports about progress on project activities and stakeholder interactions
 
Requirements
• A PhD degree in a relevant discipline, with over 5 years of work experience.
• Work experience with CGIAR or other international organizations
• Work experience in East Africa.
• Experience in publishing academic research results and must have published articles in ISI journals.
• Knowledge of quantitative research methods relevant for this position.
• Affinity with agriculture and experimental agricultural sciences (plant breeding, agronomy).
• Entrepreneurial attitude, willingness to learn about on-farm experimentation, and a strong drive to scale the impact of agricultural research.
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, including scientific communication and report writing.
• Proficiency in relevant software packages (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Well-developed skills in personal organization, priority setting, problem solving and communication with team members to solve and report difficult issues.
• Excellent skills in teamwork, negotiation, communication, and diplomacy, with the ability to interact courteously and effectively with people at all levels in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment, including external stakeholders.
• Excellent eye for detail and critical thinking.
• Ability to legally work in Uganda as local staff.

Benefits
Terms of employment
This is a locally recruited position, and all benefits are denominated and paid in Ugandan Shillings. The Alliance of Bioversity CIAT remuneration package includes a competitive salary, leave provisions and medical insurance. The initial contract will be for a period of two (2) years, subject to a probationary period of six months and is renewable based on performance and availability of funds.
