THE OPPORTUNITY
The Senior Manager, Design and Programme Readiness Primary role presents an opportunity for the right candidate to make lasting change within the education system of Uganda. You will be our internal expert on primary education, ensuring that our programme is set up to support district officials, head teachers and teachers to foster of a love of learning in all children..

REPORTING, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Manager, Design and Programme Readiness Primary role will be based in our office in Kampala. There will be regular travel within Uganda to both support the programme team and gather insights on programmatic effectiveness. The post will report to the global Head of Design and Programme Readiness based in London, and will be a member of the Uganda Leadership Team.
ENSURE THE DESIGN OF A WORLD CLASS PRIMARY TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR TEACHERS, HEAD TEACHERS AND DISTRICT OFFICIALS THAT IS GROUNDED IN THE PRINCIPLES OF INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
• Working closely with the Head of Design Programme Readiness, and the Country Director, ensure that all programmatic materials are both underpinned by global core design principles and to meet local improvement priorities
• Develop and chair the primary co-design group at the Ministry of Education and Sports, including: ensuring it is represented appropriately by staff from Basic Education, TIET and district level; building increasing knowledge and buy-in amongst the group for our design approach; building gradual ownership of the design process within the group
• Take a rapid, user-centred design approach to our primary training programme; gathering regular feedback from Programme Leads, officials, head teachers and teachers in the field, and incorporating appropriate insights and feedback into programme design, sharing this back with the STiR team on a monthly basis and making appropriate modifications accordingly
• Work closely with the Regional Managers and Monitoring and Evaluation team to identify wider programmatic trends that affect programme design, and incorporate these accordingly
• Work closely with the Associate Head, Government Relations and Partnerships to ensure that the design of the primary programme reflects national priorities
• Project manage the process for the production of design materials for primary, including procurement for design and printing
 

ACT AS THE KEY PRIMARY ADVISOR TO THE PROGRAMME TEAM TO ENSURE THEY ARE EQUIPPED TO DELIVER WITH EXCELLENCE
• Work closely with the Senior Manager, Design and Programme Readiness Secondary to co-ordinate a world class, coherent training offer for our internal programme team, including termly boot camps, monthly ‘dripfeed’ trainings and field-based follow-up
• Ensure that all internal training is underpinned by our programme readiness strategy, modelling excellent practice in all training sessions run personally
• Work closely with and empower Regional Managers to take increasing ownership of the delivery of internal programme training, so the role of Design and Programme Readiness is increasingly one of consulting and ‘critical friend’
• Project manage the planning and delivery of boot camps on an alternating basis with the Senior Manager, Design and Programme Readiness Secondary

• Make regular field visits with Programme Leads and Regional Managers, taking this ‘critical friend’ approach in order to support them to deliver the programme as intended
ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURE AS A MEMBER OF THE UGANDA LEADERSHIP TEAM
• As part of the Uganda Leadership Team, role model professionalism and integrity at all times and take ownership of your own development
• Actively contribute to the formation of national improvement priorities
• Develop strong, purposeful and collaborative relationships with the Ugandan Leadership Team, and be proactive in ensuring regular sharing of learning
• Make sure that all the work you do and relationships you build are in the STIR spirit and in line with our values
• Model ‘Growth Mindset’ at all times- show that improvement is always possible and take responsibility for supporting the whole team to achieve its goals

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Strong identification with STIR values
• An understanding of the Ugandan primary education system and promotion of change within it, through experience in either government or an NGO
• Ability to plan and design high quality educational materials
• Demonstrated interest in and understanding of pedagogical principles (for example, through experience as a teacher)
• Ability to build positive relationships and influence others, including senior officials
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to see things through to a very high standard
• Excellent writing skills
• Excellent facilitation skills and experience of facilitating high quality adult learning
• Strong planning and project management skills
• Ability to learn and adapt rapidly based on feedback and new information, as well as the ability to communicate this succinctly
• Ability to work across functions and collaborate effectively
