What is the opportunity?
Under the direction of the WASH Engineer, the Water Technician is responsible for the day-to-day monitoring of the water quality of the systems under his/her jurisdiction in accordance with the Water Mission standards and implementing the hardware components in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program including operation and maintenance of the existing water systems following established standards and procedures of Water Mission Uganda. This position is based in the refugee operation in Yumbe or Arua Districts.
As a key staff member in Water Mission, the Technician is responsible for living out and nurturing a biblical worldview culture throughout the organization that leads to God-honoring excellence in all our work and reinforces the following: providing accurate data, a staff culture with the skills and mindset needed to acknowledge mistakes or problems as opportunities to find appropriate solutions, and an environment among staff to consistently work for excellence in solutions that are consistent with Water Mission’s mission, vision, values, and standards. This is a full-time, fixed-term contract with the opportunity for yearly renewals.
The Water Technician is responsible for:
• Monitoring of water quality in accordance with the WM standards
• Operations and maintenance of water systems to supply safe water
• Oversee and support system operators to perform their duties
• Maintaining a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public.
• Key duties and responsibilities
• Implementing technical aspects of projects according to WMI standards
• Conduct field inspections and site assessments as needed under the direction of the WASH Engineer
• Conduct water quality tests, collecting water samples as needed, and documenting results.
• Ensures the systems operators collect and keep accurate data related to water quality.
• Conduct batch chlorination with system operators whenever inline chlorination systems are non-functional or in existence.
• Prepare and document weekly water quality reports and records via mobile phone-based survey forms.
• Ensure that all water systems are supplied with chlorine and the chlorinators are functional.
• Checking on the stock levels of water treatment chemicals and water quality testing reagents to ensure proper records and timely procurement.
• Ensure that the system operators are well equipped and trained in operating and maintaining the water treatment chlorination units.
• Installation of water system components that include the following main components: pumps, motors, inverters, chlorinators, and solar panels.
• Timely and effective response to water system breakdowns to ensure the constant supply of water to the communities served.
• Ensuring the safety and cleanliness of pump stations and reservoir premises routinely.
• Coordinating with the water system operators to ensure the proper and timely supply of safe water to the communities.
• Engaging with the local leaders and hygiene promotion team to ensure that tap stands and handpumps are well handled and maintained by the communities.
• Represent the organization during WASH coordination meetings with the different stakeholders.
• Training local water system operators on the safe and proper operation and maintenance of the water system components.
• Keeping an update of the water systems component properties and any other information for proper documentation.
• Project reporting, including taking photographs and recording testimonials.
• Regular monitoring of the water systems functionality.
• Ensure that fuel is supplied to the system generators on time and the fuel reports compiled and shared with the WASH Engineer.
• Undertake any other duties that may be assigned, support the work in other areas of intervention as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
What is required?
Relationship and Alignment:

Education Qualification and Experience:
• National Diploma in Water Engineering or Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering with Previous Experience implementing water supply works in Humanitarian settings.
• 3+ years’ Experience in implementation of water treatment and supply works in humanitarian settings with INGOs.
• A personal growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
• Should be willing to reside in West Nile.
• Holder of a valid Uganda Driver’s Licence.

• Proficiency in office computer applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
• Self-starter who solves problems and knows when and how to ask for assistance and counsel.
• Good planning and organizational skills
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills
• Good photography and documentation skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and a high level of integrity
• Ability to make field travels to remote locations within Uganda.
• Legal authorization to work in Uganda.
