ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:
AVSI is an international NGO with headquarters in Italy, which has been active in Uganda since 1984. Its current activities are focused in the areas of education, health, livelihoods, and protection, nutrition and refugee programs in Uganda.
PROGRAMME BACKGROUND:
AVSI, as leader of a consortium including DAI Global LLC, Makerere University, Innovations for Poverty (IPA), and RELARLE, is implementing the IKEA Foundation funded “Sustainable Market Inclusive Livelihood Pathways to Self-Reliance” (SMILES) project in Kyegegwa and Kikuube Districts in western Uganda targeting refugees and surrounding host communities in Kyaka II and Kyangwali Refugee Settlements.
JOB PURPOSE:
AVSI is seeking to recruit suitably qualified personnel for the position of Coaches, to contribute to the implementation of the “Sustainable Market Inclusive Livelihood Pathways to Self-Reliance” (SMILES) project’s interventions targeting refugees and host populations in and around Kyaka II and Kyangwali Refugee Settlements.
Reporting to the Program Officer - Graduation, the successful candidates will be based in Kyaka II or Kyangwali Refugee Settlements in Kyegegwa/Kikuube Districts with possible movements within the project’s implementation area.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Create awareness about the project and mobilize community members to participate;
• Participate in identification of beneficiaries using standard assessment guidelines and tools;
• Support beneficiaries in development of household development plan and track implementation of the plans;
• Conduct coaching for participant households based on the prevailing needs of the participants utilizing the project’s standard coaching curriculum;
• Participate in household level visits and activity follow ups as guided by the individual coaching model;
• Participate in mapping of service points within Kyaka II or Kyangwali refugee settlement and the neighboring sub counties;
• Conduct referral of beneficiaries for critical services within and outside the settlement;
• Participate in routine (monthly, quarterly and annual) data collection activities for the project;
• In collaboration with other service providers plan and conduct community level outreaches on critical issues, like gender, mental health, HIV/AIDS, WASH, nutrition education, and dialogues;
• Monitor the utilization of consumption support and asset transfer by participant households in their different treatment arms;
• Attend various training of trainers’ workshops on different themes and also participate in case management meetings organized by AVSI;
• Report on household progress and new challenges facing participants;
• Monitor the utilization of project inputs and structures in the communities;
• Respond to the immediate queries raised by the communities as feasible;
• Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS:
• The ideal candidates MUST have a minimum of a Diploma in Social Sciences or Community Development or Social Work or Agriculture or Education and Social Administration or Law.
• Experience in community work preferably within an NGO or government is highly desired.
• Demonstrable ability to coach, mentor and build capacity of participant households and groups in identification and addressing of their needs.
• Experience working with refugees and host communities is desirable.
• Flexibility to work both in a team and independently
• MUST be a current resident of Kyaka II or Kyangwali refugee settlement or neighboring villages.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to write reports
• Cultural sensitivity, patience and flexibility
• Required Language: English fluency with excellent oral and writing skills is required. Knowledge of Kiswahili and any of the local languages i.e. Runyankore, Rutooro, Runyoro, Luo, Kigegere or Kinyabwisha is a MUST.
