OVERVIEW

The Child-led Advocacy and Communications Coordinator will support Save the Children programs to empower children to claim their political and civil rights, promoting civil society voice and space, public financial management and how it impacts public investment in children, monitoring and reporting on child rights and national development planning processes (e.g. on the SDGs).The role will work closely with operations colleagues and with partners, building their capacity and building ownership and agency of local organizations. The role will support the design and implementation and monitoring and evaluation systems of our programs whilst sharing learning across our teams and partners.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
• Closely coordinate with country office colleagues, particularly the Advocacy, Campaigns, Communication and Media (ACCM) and PDQ technical team members, for engagement in national and other engagements.
• Support the delivery of Behaviours change communication activities and messaging to families and
communities on children’s rights.
• Organize Annual learning fora for partners/actors on various issues surrounding children’s rights.
(inclusive of children with disability)
• Build capacity of Save the Children staff and partner son the UNCRPD and child led advocacy.
• Support Disabled People's Organizations (DPOs) to present policy briefs, research reports highlighting the plight of children with disabilities to multi-sectoral actors through the NCPWG (National Child Protection Working Group)
• Train DPOs on engaging children, including CwDs in the budgeting process at Parish/village, sub county or district level.
• Train local and national media partners on disability sensitive child rights reporting
• Support the District planning process to ensure the inclusion of children with disabilities into their plans.
• Train DPOs to organize consultative processes for children to feed into the supplementary report on the CRPD.
• Facilitate Children including CWDs to conduct district level advocacy based on CRPD concluding observations.
• Organize and document civic engagement at the sub-county, district and regional level.
• Map out local and national child networks.
• Be the key liaison between thematic advocacy priorities and children’s network sand activate them when needed.
• Ensure government structures and policies provide space for formal child networks to contribute.
• Keep abreast of the latest technical expertise in advocating with children and bring that learning to the Uganda model.
• Support children including CWDs to conduct national level advocacy based on CRPD concluding observations.
• Work closely with other Child Participation experts and SC’s Education and Child Protection
technical leads to train children's clubs on the CRPD and concluding observations from 2016.
• Track Advocacy and Communication actions; follow up on ACCM activities, keeping notes and ensuring project communication documents are up to date.
• Sourcing information and content for local, national, and global advocacy campaigns.
• Support the collection, production of communication materials and content (e.g. briefing notes, images, video, Web pages, newsletter etc.) that meet the country and global standards.
• Coordinate efficiently with vendors (design and print houses, production houses etc.)
• Support drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories, case studies, photo stories, and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.
• Support in commissioning photography and film when required and in line with SCI policies and procedures (all consent is on file and available). Ensure branding and visibility in the materials.
• Be available for travel to the field sites for advocacy and communications support, to collect case studies and undertake photography commissions and case studies.
• Social media: Work with the Content and Communications Manager to regularly supply innovative communications to be used on internal and external social media platforms to reach and engage a wider audience.
• Maintain an up-to-date documentation Centre for communication materials, including publications, press releases and clippings, photographs, audio-visual materials, web resources etc.
• Work closely with new business development colleagues to pursue funding opportunities that allow for both integration into broader program sand standalone CRG projects; engage with technical partners and colleagues across Save the Children.
• Work with Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning (MEAL) teams to conduct quality monitoring against international standards through participatory methodologies (including child- friendly and disability inclusive methodologies).

To be a strong supporter and advocate for children in this role you will need to have:
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Social Works, Law, Child Rights, or related field.
• At least 3 years’ experience working with a (child) rights-based NGO, with specific focus on advocacy/influencing.
• Solid experience of working with child or youth networks
• Strong communication, writing, editorial and graphic skills.
• Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation, and coaching.
• Ability to establish and maintain conducive collegial relations and perform effectively as a member of a team.
• Willingness to travel and work in hard-to-reach areas, occasionally under strenuous conditions.
• Computer literacy and excellent documentation skills
• Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures ability to troubleshoot and solve problems as necessary.
