JOB DETAILS:
Working at project location – In this role, you will provide on-site support in the project location and/or VSO office, (full-time unless otherwise specified) for a set period of time.
In collaboration with the District Education Office and the CPTC train, mentor and coach caregivers, EDC facilitators and teachers, head teachers and deputy head teachers in ECCE, EDC, and early grade inclusive teaching methodology and strengthen capacity school governance structures that facilitates improvement of learning achievements in literacy and numeracy.

Duties & Responsibilities

• In coordination with the District Education Office and CCTs, conduct training workshops for teachers and Head teachers on teaching methodologies for early grade literacy; development and use of reading and numeracy materials for early grade teaching; remedial classes, Violence against Children and Psychosocial support.
• In partnership with the District Education Office and CPTC, coordinate training plans, develop inclusive training content and training materials.
• Brief District Education Officers on the project and keep them up to date on progress to ensure their participation in project implementation.
• Work closely with the VSO-Uganda team and colleagues in developing effective and efficient systems and procedures in the area of supporting children with disabilities and make recommendations for continual service improvements.
• Act as a point of contact for parents with children with disability, to ensure support requirements are understood, disseminated to parents, colleagues and adjustments are in place where necessary.
• Undertake assessments of children’s needs and deliver one to one or small group interventions to help children to develop effective strategies that support healthy behaviors, and positive engagement with study.
• Have oversight over the day-to-day work of the caregivers, EDC facilitators and early grade teachers and take responsibility of training, developing, and appraising their performance in line with inclusive quality education.
• Act as a teacher educator to provide guidance as caregivers, EDC facilitators and early grade teachers work with children with disabilities and long-health conditions and vulnerabilities.
• Administer Needs Assessments for children with disabilities to be effectively included in day to date teaching and learning process.
• Facilitate improvements in provision for disabled children, by holding a knowledge lead responsibility, and by keeping up to date with issues affecting disabled children.
• Hold stakeholders’ meetings to identify relevant support and adjustments options, facilitate any ensuing communication with academic teams and other key stakeholders to resolve barriers to reasonable adjustment and support needs.
• Conduct community engagement meetings on the value of education, role of parents in their children’s education and in supporting of reopening of school processes.
• Support cluster school review meetings together with CCTs.
• Together with the rest of the project team, participate in project monitoring, review, evaluation and dissemination of learning.
• In coordination with the project team, participate in the development of project quarterly work plans, reports and documentation of learnings.
• Any other duties of a similar nature and level of responsibility as maybe required.

Essential: Knowledge/qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree Special Needs, Inclusive Quality Education, Special Needs education, in Education, Teacher Education or related discipline
• Knowledge and understanding of teacher education system and teacher policies in the Ugandan context

Experience:
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in the field of quality and inclusive education especially working as a disability and inclusive adviser is a must
• Experience working with children with disabilities at classroom, community and national levels is required.
• Previous experience implementing a teacher development focused project will be an added advantage

Desirable:
Practical experience within a volunteering INGO context and volunteering for development approach at grass root level (in the field)

Allowance
As a VSO volunteer, you will be sharing your skills with local communities on a full time basis. VSO will cover your travel, vaccinations, accommodation, and medical insurance costs, along with a local living allowance which will be paid in local currency. This allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country, but will not be enough to send money home.

Accommodation
VSO works with some of the poorest communities in the world which means accommodation varies and will be basic.
