Job overview
The Facilities Maintenance Engineer will work under the direction of the HCRI-Uganda Facilities Manager and will work closely with other program staff based in Kampala and Seattle to contribute to the program’s strategic objectives in an international research setting. The Job Holder will be involved in complex installations, repair and maintenance of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, roofing and building envelope, structural, interior floor/wall/ceiling, building monitoring, control and other support systems for the UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre facility and other HCRI-Uganda facilities. Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Maintenance Engineer works individually or as a team member to plan and implement major and minor installations, modifications and repairs to the UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre and equipment. The incumbent will be required to follow and modify standard, prescribed trade techniques to troubleshoot and complete given assignments, and to resolve minor and major problems that arise.

Responsibilities
• Exchanges information with HCRI-Uganda department leads and /or management, maintenance staff and other staff regarding ongoing and special maintenance projects, project priorities, material management, staffing, and timeliness as required.
• Confers with management regarding safety procedures, equipment and supplies needed and provides information on repair and installation needs. Attend workshops, meetings and other events to obtain current information regarding facility operations.
• Installs, adjusts, modifies and repairs facility and infrastructure systems to include assessing the condition of fixtures and parts. The Job Holder will make recommendations for and/or executes the purchase of new parts and supplies and replaces the parts as needed.
• In collaboration with contractors, the Job Holder works to complete a variety of projects and schedules and monitors the work of other staff as assigned.
• Services, repairs, and maintains HCRI-Uganda equipment according to prescribed maintenance schedules.
• Performs routine inspections for proper equipment and fixture working order. This includes but is not limited to: checking, adjusting, repair and monitoring building systems; assessing furniture and fixtures for proper operation standards.
• Oversees selected deferred maintenance projects and recommend value engineering.
• Plan and coordinate major facilities projects; develop drawings and specifications; work with HCRI-Uganda Procurement staff to request and receive quotes for major work by outside contractors.
• Consults with architects, engineers, and contractors to inspect work in progress and contributes to the review and oversight of punch list work upon project completion.
• Manages and monitor the utility bills (electricity and water) and ensure that they are paid in time.
• Manages the backup generator and ensure up-to-date service at all times and that generator fuel is replenished as required.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or another related field.
• 5 + years of relevant engineering maintenance experience in operations for a large bio-medical research, hospital, heavy manufacturing facilities or other equipment intensive zero downtime operation is desired.
• Experience at senior level with a variety of building and infrastructure systems, tools, equipment, maintenance and repair.
• Knowledge of maintenance trade procedures, equipment, tools, and supplies commonly used to support the installation, maintenance and repair of building, tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of the safety procedures, terminology, equipment and supplies applicable to installation, maintenance and repair operations.
• Skills in assessing conditions and standards of buildings, tools, equipment, and completed work.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people at various levels within the organization who are diverse in their cultures, language and abilities.
• Skills in setting up, maintaining, and evaluating detailed records.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and tools used in the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practice.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of general building inspection.
• Extreme attention to detail.
• Strong computer skills; proficiency with a variety of software packages including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, Adobe, and Teams.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently using strong organizational and time management skills.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience working with international partners across time zones.
