JOB DETAILS:
Legal Clerk

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Legal Clerk will provide legal clerical support to the Legal Office of the University.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Filing and serving of any legal related correspondences/court documents to law firms, external counsel, courts of law, or any other office as instructed.
• Maintaining of an organized filing system in the Legal Office.
• Creating, maintaining, and updating the case register for the Legal Office.
• Collecting, delivering, and filing documents to relevant entities such as Courts, Registries, third parties, offices, and other government authorities for certification or other processes.
• Liaising with, and pursuing action from government offices (Lands Registry, Solicitor General, etc.) as instructed.
• Keeping up-to-date with all current and applicable registry legislation.
• Making payments on behalf of MUST Advocates for case-related transactions.
• Maintaining Advocate’s diaries, scheduling court cases, filing and serving documents as appropriate.
• Obtaining annual Law Council approval of Chambers Certification for the Legal Unit, to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Obtaining annual renewals of MUST Advocates’ practicing certificates from the High Court to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Coordinating meetings with relevant parties, Advocates and stakeholders as instructed.
• Providing translation and other case-related support.
• Providing Office Support and performing administrative duties.
• Performing any other role necessary for the fulfillment of all the above roles.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• A Diploma in Law from a recognized institution.
• License as a Process Server or Process server certificate.
• At least three years working experience as a paralegal, legal clerk or legal assistant in a reputable law firm or organization with knowledge and exposure to court processes and systems of various government registries
• Good knowledge of Court and registry procedures.
• Knowledge of Laws of Uganda.
• Document management skills.
• Report writing and computer skills in MS Word, Outlook and Excel programmes.
• Should be between 25 – 35 years of age.
• Agile, self-driven and a good team player.
