JOB DETAILS:
PhD Fellowship Opportunity

Principal Roles and Responsibilities
• Conduct literature review and develop PhD research question and methodology.
• Process ethics application and research clearance with the relevant regulatorybodies.
• Consent / assent study participants.
• Collect data within the study on continence management services for children withspina bifida
• Conduct data analysis of study data collected.
• Report any (serious) adverse events that may occur during the study.
• Write manuscripts and publish at least 2 papers in peer reviewed journals.
• Ensure timely planning and implementation of study activities.
• Timely progress reports to promotors.
• Participate in training courses and learning opportunities as part of the PhD program.
• Organize dissemination activities in collaboration with the research team.
• Contribute to publications and presentations of findings of the overall study.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned by PIs or Co-Is.

Person Specification
Essential
• Master degree in Disability Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology,Epidemiology, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Health Sciences, orPublic Health.
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience in undertaking qualitative research studies.
• Excellent management, organizational and writing skills.
• Knowledge of disability concepts and disability research in low and middle incomecountries.
• Knowledge of health challenges faced by persons with disabilities in low and middleincome countries.
• Knowledge of qualitative data collection and analytical approaches.
• Good working knowledge of computer programs including outlook, word, excel.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
• Commitment to career in academic research
• Commitment to long-term capacity building in disability-related research
Desired
• Additional training in disability and global health research
• Work experience in disability research
• Knowledge of spina bifida and its impairment effects and related services in Uganda www.mrcuganda.org 3
• Rehabilitation work with children with disabilities, including children with spina bifida
• Personal or family experience of disability
• Experience in qualitative data analysis
• Contributing to dissemination of research outputs in conferences and publications
• Knowledge of data analysis programs e.g. NVIVO
• Fluent in at least one Ugandan local language
