JOB DETAILS:
Protection Officer
Kyegegwa District, Uganda

Job Description
The objective of this response is to respond to the urgent life-saving needs of the refugee community while supporting and protecting them from further risk of violence and experiencing violence and harm. The Protection Officer will ensure that vulnerable persons, including women, elderly and children, have access to essential basic needs including clothing, core relief items and Nonfood items as well as hygiene materials, thereby increasing their safety and dignity; and that timely and quality referrals for health and other urgent needs are made based on individual informed consents while following the clients’ wishes.

Duties And Responsibilities
• Provide psychological first aid (PFA) and basic psychosocial support to vulnerable individuals including other clients that seek support
• Support in the establishment of information and support Desks to receive and address various complaints/concerns from the persons of concerns.
• Conduct information and awareness sessions on available services and how these can be accessed
• Distribute core relief items and Nonfood items for vulnerable households
• Identify Persons with Specific Needs (PSNs) with critical needs and support them to access timely and quality services
• Establish referral linkages (health, legal, MHPSS, child protection etc) and ensure timely referrals are made.
• Participate in various meetings to advocate and remind partners of humanitarian principles and commitment for risk mitigation for the vulnerable individuals/population.
• Collaborate with community structures and or communities to identify and recruit community volunteers to support implementation.
• Compile and submit daily and weekly updates to the team leader
• Any other duties that might arise based on the changing context and client needs.

Key Working Relationships
Position reports to: Protection Manager
Position directly supervises: Community volunteers / translators

Other internal and/or external contacts
Internal: Close coordination with IRC Protection department, WPE department, and Field Coordinator
External: Close collaboration with local actors/community structures, community groups (local NGOs, UN agencies, government) and service providers’ part of the Protection referral system.

Qualifications
• University degree in social sciences (i.e. sociology, psychology, gender studies, law, human rights, etc.).
• At least 2 years of experience in working in the social sector, particularly working with refugee and IDP populations.
• Experience working in humanitarian responses targeting vulnerable individuals including women and girls.
• Experience conducting participatory trainings on women’s protection and empowerment.
• Excellent communication and analytical skills and ability to present ideas effectively, in both oral and written form.
• Ability to communicate sensitively and without judgment; good diplomatic and persuasion skills.
• Ability to use good judgment when making decisions and to take accountability for decisions made.
• Emotional maturity and stability to resolve conflicts in non-violent way and maintain appropriate boundaries.
• Good interpersonal skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks; proven self-initiative and problem-solving abilities.
• High standard of spoken and written English.
• Good computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and Power Point.
• Be able to work in a stressful setting and adapt quickly to changing environments.
