Job Summary: The Senior Designer will lead the user research, persona development, requirements gathering, workflow design, user testing and validation. Coordinating closely with project managers, tech leads, external implementing partners, and users, you will engage in human-centered design activities and use participatory methods to include users and stakeholders in the design process. The incumbent will package user insights, produce design documentation, and inform best practices of the new tools and workflow for external audiences and application in different settings.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and document new workflows, user personas, user stories and dashboards, iterating with project team, partner, users, and design team.
  • Plan, coordinate, conduct partner design workshops, design site visits, user design sessions/workshops and produce internal & external design reports.
  • Take lead in translating design findings into tech specifications.
  • Communicate product feature requests needed to support the proposed workflow; work with product team to scope and test proposed solutions.
  • Actively participate in discussions to advance Medic Mobile’s product roadmap. Provide written and verbal feedback in Slack channels, on design calls, and in product specs for new features and UI changes. Source feedback from other teammates as requested, including facilitating team design sessions.
  •  Plan, coordinate and conduct fieldwork to test mockups and design concepts with partners and users. Document observations and insights of how they interact with the product to understand the experience of existing tools, documenting strengths as well as gaps.
  • Work closely with Impact team to develop impact metrics and indicators for new workflows and keep current ones up-to-date based on changing protocols. Analyze trends in user engagement and impact that help us determine how our workflows are faring.
  •  Influence best practices for CHW training; working with Visual Designer to develop effective training materials that can be used across the team.
  •  Share learnings from with broader team to bring successful workflows to scale in other settings.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant should have backgrounds in public health, sociology, anthropology, technology, and other diverse fields. Formal training in design is not required.
  • At least three years’ work experience in a community-facing program role, particularly in reaching vulnerable communities
  • Have an understanding of health service provision/ public health systems/ community health.
  • Be willing to extensively travel within East Africa.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to work remotely, under pressure and with limited supervision
  • Valid passport to travel internationally.
  • Experience in community-based field work with underserved populations, ICT4D or human-centered design or other participatory methods is strongly preferred.
  • The candidates should possess legal work permits for Uganda.
  • The successful candidate should not be afraid of putting thoughts on paper using hand-sketches of how systems work.
  •  Shift from abstract, big-picture thinking to detail-oriented and practical considerations for how we might use technology to shift outcomes in communities.
  • Move through diverse cultural contexts with ease. People should be comfortable around you.
  • Be a natural experimenter and have experience with or are willing to learn simple prototyping methods to get quick feedback on ideas.
  • Cultivate high levels of empathy and respect for people who may have different backgrounds and cultures than you.
  • Be able to extract clear insights out of complex systems and contradictory feedback.
  •  Be able to think on their feet and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Be curious about the world and see opportunities instead of constraints.
  • Be a great listener and a skilled facilitator.
  •  Be a great storyteller and bridge-builder. You can communicate what matters to people and help others empathize with each other.
  • Be comfortable traveling in remote areas without modern conveniences.
  • Be comfortable using and learning new and different types of technology.
  •  Have flexibility to work with remote teammates on different time zones.
  •  Have confidence to speak their mind, advocate for our users and ideas they believe in, the humility to kill failing ideas as needed and the strength to push back on unrealistic timelines or requests to move forward before concerns are sufficiently explored.
