JOB DETAILS:
BasicNeeds UK in Uganda (BNUU) is a non-profit organization committed to supporting access to quality Mental Health Services in Uganda through in-service training of health workers, research, advocacy and raising awareness about mental health issues in communities.
BNUU in partnership with Network for Africa has secured funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to support stabilized persons with mental disorder and epilepsy and their caregivers with livelihood inputs. The project aims at reducing poverty and increasing resilience for Persons with Mental Disorder and Epilepsy (PMDEs) and their caregivers in Agago District. BNUU, therefore, seeks to recruit a competent and qualified candidate to fill in the positions of Head of Livelihoods and Mental Health Counsellors.
Job Title: Mental Health Counsellor (2)
Supervisor: Mental Health Officer
Position Type: Full-Time
Location: Agago District, Kalongo Town Council .

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide psycho-education to all Persons with Mental Disorder and Epilepsy (PMDE) and their caregivers within the first three visits to the mental health outreach clinic.
• Conduct one on one counseling to PMDE’s and their caregivers
• Conduct home visits to ensure that the principles of Mental Health Gap Action Programme (MHGAP) are being applied by families and neighbours
• Educate families and neighbours of their roles in supporting PMDE
• Conduct community awareness raising sessions for various audiences in the community.
• Manage effectively and efficiently the financial resources within BNUU policies, systems and donor requirements
• Support monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning activities (MEAL) including base-line, end-line and technical assessments and research
• Proactively work with management for support and coherent delivery of results.
• Timely reporting of first results i.e, outputs achieved through activity implementation.

Job requirements:
• Bachelor degree in Community Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Social Work and Social Administration or any related degree
• Additional training in counseling is an advantage
• Knowledge of Acholi language (verbal and written)
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant working experience

Knowledge and skills:
• Broad knowledge of and insight into theories relevant to development in the field of structural poverty alleviation
• A good understanding of common Mental Health problems in Uganda
• A good understanding of factors that cause or trigger Mental Health problems
• A good understanding of counselling techniques including group therapy and occupational therapy.
