Title: Research Technicians (3 positions).
Duty Station: Sendusu.
Reports to: Banana Breeder. Duration: 21 months

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is one of the 15 Institutes of the CGIAR global research partnerships with headquarters in Ibadan Nigeria. IITA is a nonprofit organization governed by a Board of Trustees and has a permanent office in Uganda. IITA focused primarily on improving cassava and banana-based systems in the nineties. The research focus over the past 5-10 years has expanded to include research on: climate change, trade-off analysis for smallholder livelihoods, Innovation systems and impact pathways, and Institutional and policy dimensions from local to national level.
IITA Uganda is seeking to recruit qualified Ugandans, for 3 positions of Research Technician, for Accelerated Breeding of Better Bananas project based at Sendusu – Namulonge station. The successful candidates will be part of the Banana breeding team working on Pathology activities within the breeding program. .
The primary duties of the Research Technicians will include the following;
• Development, implementation and supervision of experiments on pests and diseases
• Collection, entry, analysis and synthesis of data from laboratory, screen houses and field
• Identification, rearing and maintenance of weevils to be used in experiments.
• Identification, rearing/culturing and maintenance of nematodes to be used in experiments.
• Identification, culturing and maintenance of Fusarium wilt cultures to be used in experiments.
• Identification, culturing and maintenance of Black sigatoka cultures to be used in experiments.
• Ensure cleanliness and safety of the pathology Laboratory
• Routine maintenance of screen-house and on station experiments
• Work closely with students
• Supervision and coordination of screen house and field labour
• Assist in data management in Musabase
• Assist in data tracking using Btract
• Assist the banana curator in germplasm management.
• Writing reports
• Any other duty as assigned by the supervisor

Required qualifications and skills Required:
• Bachelor’s degree with specialization in Microbiology or Plant Pathology and 4 years relevant working experience, in similar responsibility.
• Experience in working with not for profit Organizations
• Knowledge and experience working on Field and laboratory Research
• Experience in handling Lab consumables and supplies
• Ability to record Lab stocks of inventory both on shelf and cold chain
• Basic knowledge or working with Lab equipment
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral
• Computer proficiency including MS Office (Word/ PowerPoint, excel)
• Ability to complete multiple tasks under pressure and work in a multi-cultural team environment
