JOB DETAILS:
Justice Centres Uganda (JCU) a Project of the Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) is expanding its Legal Aid Services to include targeted advocacy and a holistic response to cases of Gender Based Violence and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights through Mini-Centres in the districts of BUNDIBUGYO, KASESE, TORORO and KAMPALA.
Justice Centres Uganda thus seeks to recruit competent, dynamic and creative individuals to join her team of passionate access to justice advocacy professionals in the following positions:
LEGAL OFFICERS (4 POSITIONS):
The Legal Officer will be the “In-charge” of the Mini-Centre operations and will be reporting directly to the Manager Programmes. The Legal Officer will lead a team of an Assistant Legal Officer, a Psychosocial Officer, Legal Volunteers and Community Based Volunteers.
In Particular, the Legal Officer will:
• Provide legal advice to clients.
• Provide technical support for the development of an outreach and advocacy strategy.
• Oversee and supervise legal and community based volunteers.
• Undertake community outreach sessions.
• Conduct training sessions for key stake holders and communities in Gender based violence and Sexual reproductive health rights issues.
• Represent clients in court.
• Conduct mediations.
• Undertake research and document lessons and results particularly in Gender-based violence and Sexual reproductive health rights.
• Prepare regular work plans and reports.
• Participate in weekly in house training sessions.
• Incharge of the mini-centre financial accountability.
Professional Qualifications:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from an accredited Institution. Knowledge on gender and the law will be an added advantage.
• Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice; MUST be an Enrolled Advocate of the High Court with a VALID
• Practicing Certificate.
• Minimum of 3-4 years’ relevant experience in legal practice/ Court room experience.
• At least one year’s experience in provision of Legal Aid Services as a regular staff in a professional setting.
• Specific knowledge, experience, skills, behaviour and personal qualities:
• Good understanding of gender isues especially gender based violence and sexual reproductive health rights.
• Knowledge and experience in Project planning and management.
• Proven experience working on legal aid issues and /or legal aid organizations.
• Excellent understanding of gender issues in particular sexual reproductive health rights and Gender based violence.
• Dedication to working for and with the poor, and in handling of cases of gender based violence.
• A sound understanding of access to justice and the working of the JLOS institutions.
• Lobbying & Advocacy skills.
• Experience in Mediation.
• Proven appreciation of human rights issues.
• Ability to mobilize communities and work with Legal and Community based volunteers.
• Proven team building and management skills.
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
• Proven training and facilitation skills.
