ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:
AVSI is an international NGO with headquarters in Italy, which has been active in Uganda since 1984. Its current activities are focused in the areas of education, health, livelihoods, and protection, nutrition and refugee programs in Uganda.
PROGRAMME BACKGROUND:
AVSI, as leader of a consortium including DAI Global LLC, Makerere University, Innovations for Poverty (IPA), and RELARLE, is implementing the IKEA Foundation funded “Sustainable Market Inclusive Livelihood Pathways to Self-Reliance” (SMILES) project in Kyegegwa and Kikuube Districts in western Uganda targeting refugees and surrounding host communities in Kyaka II and Kyangwali Refugee Settlements.
JOB PURPOSE:
AVSI is seeking to recruit suitably qualified personnel for the position of Community Based Trainers (CBT), to contribute to the implementation of the “Sustainable Market Inclusive Livelihood Pathways to Self-Reliance” (SMILES) project’s interventions targeting refugees and host populations in and around Kyaka II and Kyangwali Refugee Settlements. Reporting to the Program Officer - Graduation, the successful candidates will be based in Kyaka II or Kyangwali Refugee Settlements in Kyegegwa/Kikuube Districts with possible movements within the project’s implementation area.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Create awareness to and mobilize community members for project activities;
• Participate in identification of beneficiaries using standard assessment guidelines and tools;
• Attend various TOT trainings on different themes and case management meetings and other meetings organized by AVSI;
• Train participant households in core skills including Agronomy, Savings, Financial Literacy, and SPM;
• Mobilize beneficiaries and engage them into VSLA and FFBS groups and support the functionality of these group activities
• Conduct business coaching to participant households and assist them improve their crop, livestock, production techniques, and business
• development;
• Support activities related to market intelligence and market access;
• Report on household progress and new challenges facing beneficiaries;
• Monitor the utilization of project inputs and structures in their communities
• Participate in mapping of service level actors Kyaka II or Kyangwali refugee settlement and the neighboring sub counties;
• Promote bank and other financial service and government program linkages as guided by the program officers;
• Participate in data collection activities related to ongoing livelihoods interventions and other routine data needs;
• Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS:
• A minimum of a diploma in agriculture, Nutrition, economics, development studies, or related discipline is required.
• A minimum of 3 years’ field experience in a similar position in development and/or humanitarian context.
• Experience in implementing agricultural extension services using the farmer field school (FFS) methodology is highly essential.
• Experience delivering standard VSLA methodology is essential.
• Proven ability to coach, mentor and develop technical capacity of households to engage in viable economic activities.
• Experience working with refugees and host communities is desirable.
• Flexibility to work both in a team and independently
• MUST be a current resident of Kyaka II or Kyangwali refugee settlement or neighboring villages.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to write reports
• Cultural sensitivity, patience and flexibility
• Required Language: English fluency with excellent oral and writing skills is required. Knowledge of Kiswahili/French and any of the local languages i.e. Runyankore, Rukiga, Rutooro is a MUST.
