General Summary
The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases through research and capacity development. IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab), Global Health security and Health Systems Strengthening Departments.
Project Background
The USAID Local Partner Health Services -TB Activity (LPHS -TB Activity) is a five-year USAID funded transition award from DEFEAT TB Activity to the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) as a prime partner. Awarded in October 2021, LPHS-TB Activity aims to contribute to substantial reduction of Uganda’s TB burden by 2026 through scale up of evidence-based and high impact interventions towards achievement of the End TB strategy targets of 90% TB treatment coverage and treatment success rate of all TB cases in Uganda. The USAID LPHS-TB Activity will lead the USAID’s support to GoU’s national TB reduction and Control Strategy, working with the NTLP, DHMT in three focus districts of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso. This support will also involve direct support to MDR TB management at Mulago National Referral Hospital and six (6) Regional Referral Hospitals (RRHs) and technical assistance (TA) to 10 RRHs.
In collaboration with the National TB and Leprosy Program (NTLP), the USAID/ LPHS-TB Activity plans to carry out a pilot titled “Pretesting of the updated Uganda national TB screening and diagnostic algorithm”. To achieve the above objective, IDI seeks to recruit nine (9) motivated and competent quantitative data research assistants as indicated below;
Key Responsibilities
1. Participate in a two-day protocol and tools orientation training workshop.
2. Engage with management at the respective health facilities and ward in charge through an entry meeting to ensure that a seamless data collection process is carried out.
3. Identify potential study participants and recruit them according to the eligibility criteria laid out in the protocol working closely with the TB unit in charge.
4. Extract data from health facility tools (presumptive TB register, Unit TB register, and CXR register) and data into an electronic data collection tool.
5. Carry out time and motion studies and enter observation findings into an electronic data collection tool.
6. Perform level one quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) to ensure all fields in the questionnaire complete and accurate
Person Specification
1. Diploma or degree in any relevant field with previous experience working as a research assistant in health-related programs, particularly TB, TB/HIV programs.
2. Experience extracting quantitative data from MoH HMIS data collection tools
3. Use of electronic data management systems like ODK, RedCap
4. Able to work independently and as part of a team while at the hospital
5. Experience working with patients with TB will be an added advantage
