About planetGOLD Uganda
The planetGOLD Uganda project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). In Uganda, IMPACT is the executing agency, in partnership with Uganda’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the country’s Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM).
The project will work together with local communities to reduce the use of mercury in artisanal and smallscale gold mining—the world’s largest source of anthropogenic emissions of mercury pollution— while improving the health and lives of local mining communities. ASGM Association and Cooperative Officer
The ASGM Association and Cooperative Officerserves as the main point of contact for ASGM beneficiaries of the planetGOLD Uganda project – including miners, associations, cooperatives, traders and exporters that are engaged with the project through prescribed activities.
Under the supervision of the planetGOLD Uganda Project Manager, the ASGM Association and Cooperative Officer works closely with all members of the planetGOLD Uganda project management unit (PMU). Their primary responsibilities include:
Activity Planning & Implementation (60%)
1. Serve as the primary contact for engaging project partners and stakeholders on activities being carried out with partner ASGM actors, as defined by the project’s activity plan.
2. Carry out regular communication and engagement with project partners in the ASGM sector, in order to provide consistent and ongoing support for obtaining project goals.
3. Ensure that ASGM project partners are well informed, understand and supportive of planned activities (and suggest modifications as needed, based on beneficiary feedback).
4. Participate in and contribute to regular planning calls with the PMU.
5. Identify and coordinate specific dates for activities with project stakeholders, in close collaboration with the Training and Sensitization Coordinator.
6. Collaborate with other members of the PMU with respect to communications needs for activities, streamlining of the project’s gender action plan and stakeholder engagement plan, procurement and logistics coordinator, or other.
7. Ensure proper tracking of the necessary information related to activity implementation that is required for donor reporting and monitoring and evaluation, in close collaboration with the
Training and Sensitization Coordinator.
1. Prepare and request approval for activity-specific budgets and spending.
Stakeholder Engagement (20%)
1. Respond to requests for information by project beneficiaries and stakeholders, as well as potential new stakeholders.
2. Support the Project Manager and the Events and Meeting Coordinator with planning and execution of relevant stakeholder engagement activities, as needed (e.g. National Workshop).
Communications (10%)
1. Proactively share information related to activity implementation and impacts on project beneficiaries in the ASGM sector with the Communications Manager.
2. Respond to targeted information requests from the Communications Manager in support of the development of specific communications and knowledge-sharing products.
3. Coordinate direct communication between the Communications Manager and project beneficiaries, where needed.
Due Diligence (5%)
1. Support the due diligence process for selection of project partners in order to ensure they meet the acceptable threshold for support from the project, based on set criteria.
2. Report any inconsistencies with performance of project beneficiaries and established criteria to the planetGOLD Uganda Project Manager.
Team Collaboration (5%)
1. Participate in regular team meetings, as required.
2. Ensure proper communication with other colleagues in the PMU regarding upcoming activities.
3. Candidates are asked to clearly demonstrate in their applications how they meet the requirements of the position.
Essential qualifications, expertise and skills:
1. Hons. Bachelor’s degree in Law, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Education, and B. Commerce, or other relevant study
2. At least 3 years of relevant experience in a related role, such as capacity building support, community organizing, implementation of development projects in communities, etc.
3. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the ASGM sector, including applicable laws, regulations and policies pertaining to the sector.
4. Knowledge of legal and regulatory processes for the creation of associations/cooperatives in Uganda.
5. Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation processes, including experiencing documenting and tracking various performance-related indicators and information.
6. Demonstrated experience in using various software systems, such as Microsoft Excel and Word, Box, etc.

1. Candidates must be fluent in English (spoken, written and read); Knowledge of additional languages spoken in Uganda is considered a strong asset
