Reach The Youth Uganda (RTY) is a youth focused organization implementing projects in the Greater Masaka region and in the districts of Kyenjojo, Kasese and Kamwenge. With Support from USAID/Catholic Relief Services under Sustainable Outcomes for Children and Youth (SOCY) Project, RTY is implementing the SOCY project in the districts of Kasese, Kyenjojo and Kamwenge. To strengthen project implementation, RTY wishes to recruit a project Accountant based in Kampala-RTY Head Office and Accounts Assistant based in Kasese.

Position: Accountant
Location: RTY Head Office, Kla
Reporting to: Executive Director
Line Manager: Project Manager, SOCY
Directly Supervises: Accounts assistant, Project coordinators based in the field.

Functions/Duties: The function is to safeguard the assets (financial and physical) of RTY and ultimately the donors against fraud, loss or misuse and ensure proper documentation and processing of the finances of the organization. S/he shall be responsible for maintaining and controlling the General Ledger Accounts and financial transactions of the organization that shall include analytical work and thorough review of financial records for SOCY project and carry-out the day-to-day, monthly and year-end operations for SOCY project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform the processing and recording of accounts payable functions and ensure that all invoices and staff reimbursements are accurately handled.
  •  Document daily the financial transactions by entering account information.
  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information; preparing trial balances, bank reconciliations, cash books, and other reports.
  • Prepare liquidation reports and advance requests on a monthly basis
  • Maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Secure financial information by completing database backups.
  • Maintain financial security by following internal controls.
  • Prepare payments by verifying documentation, and requesting disbursements.
  • Answer accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policy and regulations.
  • Comply with state and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation.
  • Prepare special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing accounts information and trends.
  • Administering payrolls and controlling income and expenditure.
  • Compute taxes owed and prepare tax returns, ensuring compliance with payment, reporting and other tax requirements.
  • Compiling and presenting reports, budgets, commentaries and financial statements.
  •  Managing Accounts Assistant, workloads and deadlines.
  • Monitor and collect data to assess accuracy and integrity; ensure compliance with applicable standard (i.e.GAAP), rules and regulations.
  •  Monitor and update SOCY Asset register/inventory on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure all procurements are guided by the procurement policy and are in line with guidelines issued by funding partners taking care of interests of each partner.
  • Train and build capacity to other staff mainly field based accounts assistant, project coordinator and other staff.

Skills & Competencies:

  •  Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Be able to demonstrate attention to details and good-record-keeping
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point, especially Excel).
  • Team player and can collaborate with other teams in the organization
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to clearly communicate issues to all levels of management.
  • Knowledgeable in USAID Rules and Regulations

Experience:

  • At least 5 solid year’s working in a non-profit organzation.
  • Experience in software accounting packages preferably QUICK BOOKS.
  • Experience working on USAID funded projects is an added advantage. Education:
  • Must have a degree in B.Com or Business Administration Majoring in Accounting or Finance
  • At least Level 2 Professional course in ACCA or CPA.
