Animal Health Research Specialist
Background
On behalf of the international Livestock Research Institute (lLRi), Bioversity International is now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Support Specialist. Bioversity international and ILRI are CGIAR Research Centres.
Role
Based in Kampala, Uganda, and under the supervision of Coordinator, Build Uganda Project, the Research Support Specialist will support research within the ‘BuildUganda: Boosting Uganda's investments in Livestock Development Program, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)..

Key Responsibilities
Program reporting and administration
• Work with academics and students in the project to plan, organize and implement field data collection and laboratory activities
• implement and maintain the project database system for lab data collection (project blorepositon/)
• Ensure that project biological data are collected appropriately
• Write monthly summary reports for dissemination to all project members
• Travel internationally as required, for example to tunder meetings in Germany or to lLRl headquarters in Nairobi
Budget management
• Work with the Program Accountant and with Budget Managers to oversee, plan and track the budget
• Oversee the field expenditure during sampling or survey activities
• Plan the daily funding needs for the field teams
• Manage stores supply and orders to external suppliers
• Maintain up-to-date inventories of equipment, supplies and consumables
Communications
• Participate actively in annual project meetings, some of which will be held internationally

  Qualifications and competencies
• Master’s Degree in a biomedical subject leg. Veterinary Medicine, lntectious Diseases, Microbiology)
• At least live years ol relevant experience with coordinating zoonotlc disease research, including field sampling and slaughterhouse surveillance
• Management and leadership ot field and laboratory-based disease sun/eillance activities
• Experience with veterinary diagnostics and reporting
• Experience with sample storae management, control and archiving
• Management and supervision of research teams
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an engaging personality
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and partner organizations
• Ability to communicate with different stakeholders from inside and outside Uganda
• Understanding of the veterinary public health landscape in Uganda
• Ability to handle electronic data entry and data management
• Strong English language skills, both written and spoken
• Willingness to travel locally, regionally and Internationally


Experience:
• Experience working in an international organisation and/or in applied agricultural research
• Experience with data entry in electronic databases
• Experience of working with international epidemiology and public health researchers.
