JOB DETAILS:
POSITION: Biomedical Engineering Manager
Reports to the Facilities Manager
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
• Takes care of all aspects of the department’s management, such as equipment acquisition planning, planned preventative maintenance planning, budget control, spare parts acquisition planning, Tools acquisition, equipment installation and testing planning and execution, outside vendor management and liaison, policies and procedures development, and the general execution of Biomedical Engineering Services to the hospital.
• Performs rounds on clinical units to verify proper equipment use and operation.
• Ensures electrical and mechanical safety of medical equipment. Consults and liaises with other department heads regarding their concerns with equipment and planned preventative maintenance schedules..
MINIMUM EDUCATION
• Education Requirements: Bsc. Biomedical Engineering
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
• Experience Requirements: 3 years’ experience in a Biomedical Engineering Setting
• Critical Competencies required: Man Management, Critical Analysis, Problem Solving, Budget Control, Knowledge of Electronic Devices Troubleshooting, Equipment Maintenance Planning, Stock Control, and Vendor Management.

Key Tasks:
• Maintain a schedule for the Planned preventative maintenance of all equipment
• Ensure that all departments are aware of schedule at all times
• Execute Planned Preventative Maintenance on medical equipment
• See to the establishment of Annual Maintenance Contracts for all equipment that may require such
• Follow up and enforce warranty contracts
• Monitor the implementation of the AMCs and the warranty contracts
• Recommend to the IT Director the correct stafing requirements of the department.
• Coordinate with team and user departments to mobilize resources and scheduling to do in-house repairs and servicing.
• Formulate and implement department policies and procedures. Promotes department and hospital-wide policies.
• Deploy department manpower according to needs of hospital. Monitors manpower performance and accounts for activities of staff.
• Participate in special projects such as specfications development, special procurements, task forces, vendor assessment
• Follow up and investigation of incidents relating to medical equipment, producing reports to the same effect for management.
• Follow up of international safety notices and device recall announcements. Take necessary steps to effect recall and safety measures in a timely fashion.
• Subscribes to international journals and keeps track with medical equipment industry trends and developments and advices the hospital on any new innovations or updates thereof.
Key Performance Indicators:
• Availability of PPM schedules
• Awareness of all user departments of the schedule before actual service.
• Equipment serviced regularly and on time.
• Availability of AMC contracts where necessary
• Satisfactory follow up of warranty issues
• Satisfactory turnaround time on breakdown repairs, service calls by vendors through the AMCs.
• Availability of information to the IT Director about manpower planning and needs in the BME department.
• In house maintained equipment serviced at all times up to standard.
• Policies and procedures are in place and routinely implemented
• Satisfactory performance by the staff.
• Adequate participation in special projects.
• Reports on investigations, minimal occurrence of maintenance issue related incidents.
• Rapid response to device recall and safety notices.
• Regular equipment upgrades.
