DURATION: 2 YEARS (RENEWABLE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY OF FUNDING)
DESCRIPTION:
Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), with funding support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is implementing the USAID/Uganda Combating Wildlife Crime (CWC) Activity in partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), Natural Resources Conservation Network (NRCN) and Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). The goal of this activity is to reduce wildlife crime in Uganda. WCS seeks to recruit a Project Coordinator to lead and/or coordinate the implementation of specific counter-wildlife crime interventions targeting government, private sector, NGO and community stakeholders.
POSITION OBJECTIVES:
A. Develop and strengthen partnerships aimed at building effective support for conservation in Uganda, particularly to reduce wildlife crime.
B. Ensure sustainability of CWC interventions and support to the government of Uganda and partners.
C. Enhance coordination and collaboration aimed at combating wildlife crime among and between state and non-state actors including communities, the private sector and civil society.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The CWC Project Coordinator will contribute to the overall development of WCS Uganda’s Species Conservation Program which has, at its core, a landscape-based approach to conservation that promotes linkages across development interests and priorities through collaboration with partner ministries, departments, institutions and agencies of the government of Uganda, conservation organizations working the landscapes, private sector, international NGOs and consortiums, other development partners supporting the environmental sector, and park adjacent communities.
The CWC Project Coordinator will be mainly responsible for developing and maintaining collaboration mechanisms and partnerships aimed at combating wildlife crime by identifying and leveraging the skills, expertise and assets of existing key stakeholders at a local, sub-regional and regional scale. The Project Coordinator will work closely with stakeholders across the nation and beyond to developworkable models and mobilize support toward combating wildlife crime. Specifically, the Partnership Coordinator will be responsible for the following:
1. Provide technical support to the USAID/CWC Activity subgrantees.
2. Document utilization of SMART, OWODAT, online secure information sharing platform and CITES electronic permit system by MTWA, UWA and National anti-Wildlife Crime Coordination Task Force (NWCCTF)
3. Support data collection, analysis, and reporting on the CWC Learning agenda
4. Monitor the effectiveness of Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation measures being implemented around Murchison Falls Protected Area.
5. Work together with the CWC Activity staff to document success stories, reports, lessons learned and other communication materials for CWC Activity.
6. Develop and organize workshops, training sessions and conservation education and awareness events in line with the CWC activity work plan and WCS’ CWT portfolio.
7. Supervise consultants and manage short-term technical consultants while ensuring compliance with WCS procurement policies and standards.
8. Represent WCS at public events, conferences, meetings, and seminars.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. A Bachelor’s or Master’s (preferred) degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental management, wildlife management, biology, social science, international relations, law, economics, or journalism).
2. At least 5 years of experience (in a similar position) working with government officials and/or donors on wildlife conservation and sustainable development issues, preferably with an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or Inter-Governmental Organization (IGO).
3. A willingness and ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision.
4. Knowledge of and experience in national and or regional/international policy processes preferably within an East African context.
5. Work experience engaging with the private sector is a strong advantage.
6. Relevant and proven experience in project cycle management, i.e., co-ordinating larger projects, including overseeing consultants and managing project budgets and reporting.
7. Experience in implementing USAID-funded projects is a strong advantage.
8. Strong research and analytical skills, and an ability to articulate complex issues clearly.
9. Strong networking skills and communication skills and ability to work in different cultural contexts.
10. Fluency in spoken and written English.
11. Familiarity with standard word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software, and with electronic communication technology.
