Job/Role Purpose:
The Communications and Advocacy Adviser will be responsible for maintaining internal communications strategies for MAKE WAY-VSO Uganda to keep project beneficiaries and partners informed of the MAKE WAY project presence, information, and events. The Adviser will be expected to investigate preferred communications channels and ways for delivering information to different target groups as well as do research and write stories that capture the impact of the project. The ideal candidate will ensure the production of quality communication materials and information’s throughout the project working hand in hand with other volunteers who will be engaged in a similar project.
Task Responsibilities
• Assist with the development and deployment of strategic communications materials related the project.
• Support the design and implementation of joint advocacy campaigns in partnerships with Make Way consortium members to which VSO Uganda is a member.
• Develop and implement effective communications activities for MAKE WAY and Health programs in VSO.
• Write and optimize content for the VSO website, digital newsletters, print publications and social networking sites. Ensure consistency in terms of voice, branding, messaging and frequency of posting via digital channels.
• Design and Implement partner capacity building activities on responsible use of media for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights advocacy as well support the implementation of SRH media advocacy campaign.
• Investigate preferred communications channels for different target groups and ways for delivering information to these different target groups.
• Research and write success stories that capture the impact of the project on different targeted groups.
• Create relevant content and communicate in a systematic manner.
• Support the communication unit in implementing the communications plan by developing areas such as newsletters; databases; marketing materials etc.

Competence required
Essential:
Knowledge/qualifications:
• Relevant bachelor’s degree – communications, public relations, journalism or a similar discipline
• Master’ degree in any of the above related fields will be added advantage.
Experience:
• At least 3 years demonstrable experience in a similar role
• Experience working in a developing country and/or INGO
• Experience in communications for Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) programming is an added advantage.
Skills/Abilities:
• Able to develop clear and realistic plans to deliver agreed objectives within deadlines, involving key individuals in the process.
• Provide guidance during key project learning events, ensuring relevant branding, and capture of key learnings for communication with stakeholders.
Other Duties
• Fulfil other appropriate level responsibilities as defined by the line manager from time to time
• Abide by VSO core values and other VSO policies regarding, Safeguarding, Gender Sensitivity, Child Protection, Data Protection Act, Anti-Bribery, Confidentiality and Security.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; experience of developing compelling, highquality documentation.
• Strong representation skills - Guidance and practice notes; concept notes; case stories, presentations for different audiences.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Experience in developing print and digital communications materials.
• Desk and qualitative research skills.
• Understanding of multimedia communications.
• Sound working knowledge of digital and social media.
• Presentation and influencing skills to obtain buy-in of recommendations.
• IT (MS office) proficiency.
• Able to travel, including work away from the home base for up to 50% of time, both within the country and occasionally internationally and some weekend and evening work.
Desirable:
• Proven experience in developing and implementing communications strategies.
• Proven ability in delivering relevant content to digital and social media.
• Strong in expressing creativity in all different communication channels and ability to quickly switch between them.
• Practical experience within a volunteering INGO context and volunteering for development approach.
