Organizational Description:
AVSI is an international NGO with headquarters in Italy. AVSI has been active in Uganda since 1984. Its current activities are focused on the areas of Education, Health, Livelihoods, Protection, Nutrition, Emergency programs in Uganda.
Programme Background:
AVSI is implementing a 4 Years project – Till end of 2024 funded by the Embasys of the Kingdome of Netherlands titled “Skilling in Agripreneurship for increased Youth Employment” – SAY project. The SAY Goal is: To contribute to increased agri-skills level and gainful employment of youth in the agriculture sector in Uganda
The specific objectives are as follows:
Specific Objective 1: Employable agribusiness skills levels of 10,000 youth 18-30years old in target areas in Uganda enhanced by 2024.
Specific Objective 2: Skilled youth (aged 18-30 years) employment in well-paying agribusiness jobs and self-run agripreneurship in target project areas of Uganda boosted by the end of the project (2024)
Specific Objective 3: Youth aged 13 Specific Objective 4: Enabling environment for market-responsive agri-skilling and youth gainful engagement in agribusiness in Uganda strengthened by 2024
The project will contribute to: Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands 2019- 2024 Multi Year Strategic Plan, Vision 2040 of Uganda, Uganda National Agriculture Policy 2013 and the BTVET 10-year Strategic Plan for Revolutionizing Skills Development in Uganda (Skilling Uganda Initiative) with a focus on youth.
It will furthermore contribute to the following Sustainable Development Goals: #1No Poverty, #2 Zero Hunger, #5 Gender Equality, #7 Affordable and Clean Energy, #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, #13 Climate Action, #15 Life On Land, #16Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, #17 Partnerships for the Goals and will have a tangible impact to Uganda’s SDG report card.
Job Purpose:
AVSI is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified person for the position of Communications Assistant to develop and implement the Skilling in Agripreneurship for increased Youth Employment” – SAY project communication strategy, to contribute to the implementation of the project’s communication, visibility and branding among key audiences and at events.
Reporting to the Communications & Fundraising Manager, the successful candidate will be based in Kampala District with minimal travels outside the project implementation area. .

Specific Responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities the Communication Assistant shall undertake and deliver:
• Develop a communications strategy for the Skilling in Agripreneurship for increased Youth Employment” – SAY project.
• To enhance the awareness, understanding, and knowledge of key audiences.
• Change behavior and perceptions where necessary, and help achieve overall program objectives.
• Conceptualize, design and develop campaign materials on Skilling in Agripreneurship for increased Youth Employment” – SAY project.
• Project with appropriate and relevant messages tailored for key audiences using various formats as appropriate such as text, graphics, imageries, info graphics, video, printed materials, etc.
• Specify appropriate communication channels, dissemination methods and media such as video, print, online media, traditional media, and social media, among others to effectively communicate key messages to specific audiences.
• Design standard publication layouts for the project.
• Support communication activities through knowledge management, information exchange and building capacity of the project team in communication matters.
• Enable appropriate access to information, visibility materials and proper storage/management of such materials/equipment.
• Gather content for change stories on the project as per plan.
• Ensure professional relationships with the local media.
• Perform other duties within the area of responsibility as requested by supervisor.

General Competencies:
• Ability to work in a team in a multi-cultural environment.
• Ability to multi-task and work irregular and long hours.
• Sound knowledge of AVSI Foundation.
• Proficiency in standard computer applications: the objective of this assignment is to provide professional visual and photography, which can be used for external communication and publication purposes.
• Willingness to be based in rural setting with frequent travel within the implementation area. • Cultural sensitivity, patience and flexibility.
Required Language: English fluency with excellent oral and writing skills is required. Knowledge of Kiswahili/French is a distinct advantage and any of the local languages.

Requirements:
• Preferably Degree in Mass Communications; Development Communication;
• Communications, Journalism, or other relevant fields.
• At least two years of relevant experience in developing, designing, production and publishing/dissemination of communication products using various media, organizing and producing major events of regional nature.
• Relevant experience in working for international organizations or consultancy assignments, especially in strategic communications planning.
• Knowledge of Monitoring and Evaluation.
