Communications Officer
The role
This role is for someone experienced in communicating with global audiences.
The Communications Officer will be responsible for promoting Justice Defenders’ work, to inform and motivate current and potential supporters, donors and partners. The role holder will act as a content manager for high-net-worth individuals, researching their interests and creating bespoke content to engage them.
A key part of this role will be sourcing and gathering appropriate stories from the prisons where we work, ensuring they demonstrate the impact against key communications objectives. We are fortunate to work with people from a huge variety of backgrounds so there is an abundance of stories we could gather. The role holder will use initiative to identify new ways to further the reach of Justice Defenders’ work, for example telling peoples’ stories in exciting new ways.
In order to be successful in this role, you must:
• Have a thorough understanding of what makes a great story
• Be able to quickly identify stories with potential
• Be confident in advocating to the team as to which stories to explore further
• Retain donor information and use this to inform the content you produce
The role holder will be a creative individual who is able to create engaging communications products (written stories, audio recordings and videos), produce plans to promote content for various global audiences, and distribute raw and final content to relevant internal stakeholders, both within Uganda, the US, the UK and Europe.
They will be meticulous in organising all raw content associated with stories (audio recordings, transcripts, notes, photographs with metadata, video, consent forms) into folders which are easily accessible for colleagues.
Although stationed in Uganda, the role holder will report to the Communications and Content Lead based in the UK and will be focused on supporting and implementing the global communications strategy which supports our fundraising. They will be expected to follow local procedures and build excellent relationships within Uganda, alongside working with the
Communications Officer based in Kenya.
Duties:
• Creation of content production briefs, securing approval of the briefs, creating the content, ensuring coordination of content distribution and reporting.
• Recording interview transcripts, writing stories, ensuring consent forms are completed and captions and descriptions are included in the metadata of photographs.
• Recording video interviews and b roll footage when we haven’t employed a freelance photographer/videographer.
• Editing audio and videos.
• Preparing briefs and shot lists for photographers and videographers and managing them to deliver as required.
• Improving processes, developing and maintaining a photo and video library.
• Disseminating stories from the field projects to partners.
• Drafting, editing and publishing article for Justice Defenders’ email marketing.
• Disseminating newsworthy articles to global partners and supporters worldwide.
• Maintaining the organisations’ mailing databases.
• Drafting regular updates for the global social media channels and website to promote events, achievements and stories collected locally.
• Listening to conversations on social media to identify opportunities to engage and build our community.
• Editorial review of internal reports.
Requirements
• Communications and work experience
• University degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or BA Social Sciences.
• At least 3 years’ professional experience in public relations, media relations, or communications including knowledge and competence in digital communications, writing for social media and websites.
• At least 1 years’ professional experience writing for a US or UK audience.
• Experience in using Adobe Premiere Pro to edit videos, or demonstratable interest in learning this skill.
• Management of a social media account.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical colleagues, and have excellent report writing skills.
• Willingness to travel to programme sites across Uganda, interact effectively with local communities, conduct interviews with programme participants and document the activities.
• Experience sourcing, booking and working with freelance photographers or videographers.
• A commitment to recording peoples’ stories accurately, ethically and with sensitivity.
• Working knowledge of graphic design and simple photography with a keen eye for details.
• Experience working remotely with teams based internationally would be an advantage
• Ability to work independently but consult as necessary and deliver results with minimum supervision while working to deadlines.
• Good communication skills and strong command of English and
• Swahili languages.
