The Content and Communications Manager will elevate the visibility of SCI Uganda’s work by defining and leading our communications, media, social media and content strategy and implementation and developing thought leadership in all our communication across all channels. The job holder will work with thematic leads, project, and regional teams to create and produce evidence-based or data-driven content for different stakeholders. He/ She will collaborate with the ACCM team to develop innovative ideas and demonstrate exceptional content presentation skills. This role reports to the Director for Advocacy, Communications, Campaigns and Media, and will lead Communications, media and content and works cross-functionally with teams across the organization.

THE ROLE

Key areas of accountability include:

Development and implementation of the country office’s communications and media strategy.

  • Works with the key CO staff, regional office staff, and others to develop fit-for-purpose communication and media strategy and guidelines, including social media.
  • Develop a specific, time-bound plan for the implementation of the internal and external communications strategy.
  • Monitor the progress of the implementation of the communications strategies and adapt them to new opportunities.
  • Implement country and/or project-specific communication strategies and work plans designed to maintain and enhance the visibility and reputation of SCI Uganda, as well as support fundraising and partnership activities, ensuring alignment with overall Advocacy, Communications, Campaigns and Media strategy and SCI Uganda Country strategic plan.
  • Ensure that risk assessments and mitigation strategies are developed as a part of the media and communications strategy.
  • Analyse and position our brand.
  • Analyzing the success of campaigns and creating reports
  • Identify potential risks to children in all ACCM activities, including media visits, story collection, and visitors/donor visits, plan mitigating measures and assign staff to be responsible for the implementation.

Content Management

  • Build and execute the content strategy, with an emphasis on delivering programmatic campaigns and thought leadership that differentiate SCI Uganda in our core thematic areas of Education, Health and Nutrition, Child Protection and Child Rights Governance, Youth Livelihoods and Child Poverty.
  • Delivery of high-quality, engaging communications products, campaigns and events aimed at internal colleagues and external stakeholders. These may include but are not limited to producing newsletters, blogs, intranet content, short videos, impact stories, Op-Eds, position papers and coordinating event management – in person and virtually.
  • Maintaining robust, forward-looking plans for delivering all communications products and events, including a database of case study leads to be used in events and other comms.
  • Working as part of a team to produce high-profile briefing materials for donors, Committees, coalitions, and responses to different stakeholder requests, including media.
  • Transform sophisticated in-depth materials and synthesize complex topics into clear, digestible content that can be shared with different stakeholders.
  • Partner and collaborate with key business partners to create opportunistic content, as well as define a content distribution strategy across all communications channels.

External Communications and Media 

  • Develop external communications and media strategies/guidelines to guide the engagement of Save the Children Uganda Country office with the media and general public, in line with Country Strategic Plans and goals, as well as advocacy and campaigns strategies and any specific program and projects needs.
  • Ensure that all media messages and engagements are developed to the highest level of quality and timeliness and then approved by the ACCM Director
  • Proactively identify media topics, prepare media messages, assess appropriate media channels, including social media, for communicating those messages and facilitate the process of disseminating/communicating those messages.
  • Develop guidelines for organization of, and monitor the quality of external events, including strict compliance with Save the Children’s branding and visibility guidelines.
  • Establish proactive and strategic relationships with media houses and develop and maintain contact information of journalists and media outlets (print, TV, radio, web etc.) within and outside Uganda that can help advance Save the Children’s strategic priorities in Uganda.
  • Familiarize himself/herself with the work of Save the Children Uganda to effectively represent the organization in media engagements where relevant.
  • Ensure adequate budgeting and planning for external events.
  • Collaborate with the media, including at the village and district level, by organizing project site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate.
  • Digital Media Communications – In line with the SCI Social Media Policy, monitor, maintain and update SCIs social media platforms; develop and implement social media plans and campaigns; develop high-impact social media content, including photos and programme videos showcasing SCI Uganda’s programme and project achievements.

Internal Communications

  • Develop internal communications strategies and guidelines that follow SCI global guidelines and good practices.
  • Work with relevant teams to develop minimum standards per project for communications materials and services.
  • Oversee the quality and timeliness of the production of internal communications materials.
  • Ensure appropriate communications materials are communicated through appropriate channels, including messages to staff, the website, project briefs, and other channels.
  • Develop and oversee implement a strategy for communications among COs staff.
  • Ensure that cross-cutting themes like child participation, gender, and disability are mainstreamed in all media and communications work or content.

   Donor Relations

  • In collaboration with the Head of New Business Development, develop and maintain an updated list of donors, special interest groups/coalitions/committees. Assist in developing donor visit schedules/brochures, etc. Support preparation of background materials, briefs and information kits for visiting donors and high-profile guests/visitors.
  • Generate donor-specific visibility content, including text, photos, videos and audio, for use across a range of integrated online platforms to support global and country fund-raising activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.

 Capacity building

  • Identify communications capacity gaps Save the Children Uganda Country Office and its partners and work to ensure they are improved.
  • Develop and implement a communications capacity building plan in general with a particular focus on identifying, planning and implementing communication initiatives, methods and skills of documenting and communicating lessons and good practices.
  • Build staff capacity in developing and implementing community-level communication initiatives.
  • Build the capacity of key staff at all levels to ensure they can be effective ambassadors for our work in Uganda.
  • Ensure key staff have media training.

Staff and budget management

  • Lead and manage relevant communication team members and their reports.
  • Oversee that all direct staff proactively build and maintain technical skills and competencies required for their responsibilities.
  • Manage the performance of the relevant Communication Team members through:

1.            Effective use of the Performance Management System, including the establishment of clear, measurable objectives, provision of ongoing feedback, periodic reviews and fair and unbiased performance evaluations.

2.            Coaching, mentoring and accessing capacity development opportunities.

3.            Recognition and rewards for outstanding performance in consultation with the ACCM Director

To be a strong supporter and advocate for children in this role you will need to have:

  • At least six years of experience in leading communications and media work for a large organization, preferably NGO, and team management experience
  • Minimum of a Degree in social science, human rights, development, international relations, journalism/mass communication.
  • Knowledge of and/or direct work experience in the non-profit sector
  • Experience in developing and implementing communications and media strategies.
  • Personnel and budget management experience
  • Excellent representational skills with a proven track record of influencing key audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, to analyze complex information and offer creative, practical and effective solutions.
  • Excellent influencing and negotiation skills, including an ability to deal with people at all levels with credibility, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Excellent written and storytelling skills, and an ability to produce good quality documents and information for a variety of audiences and communicate good practices.
  • Strong inter-organizational skills such as networking, negotiation and communication.
  • Willing and able to travel time to support field teams as security permits.
  • Ability to produce high-quality communications products and services under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent English skills, both verbal and written, are required. Knowledge of additional local languages desired.
