JOB DETAILS:
This position is with ARIA, a programme hosted by the Meliore Foundation, which explores power, influence and corporate accountability in the climate and nature space. We use research, analysis, data insights and investigative approaches to reveal and challenge obstacles to a cleaner and more sustainable world.

We're looking for an innovative Deputy Investigations Manager with a unique combination of skills who wants to play a major role in tackling climate change.

You’ll be helping to manage and oversee our team of eight investigators located in the UK, France, Spain, the Netherlands, South Africa and Kenya with diverse experience in newsrooms, investigative outlets and NGOs. The team uses a range of investigative tools and techniques to conduct short and longer term investigations into environmental harms and the actors that are blocking the green transition. This includes detailed desk based research but also the opportunity to travel. We partner with news outlets, NGOs and others to share the findings of our investigations to help promote positive climate action. The role reports to the Investigations Manager, and will help with investigations, management, strategy, and editorial process.
If this sounds like you, we'd love for you to apply.

How you'll contribute
The Investigations Deputy Manager will work with ARIA’s Investigations Manager, Analysis Manager and Director to:
• Help manage a team of Investigators providing pastoral care, personal development and performance management - including related administrative duties.
• Oversee complex investigations into a range of climate related topics, and play an editorial role, providing advice and support as required, and deciding which leads to follow and which investigations to drop.
• Fact check, edit and sign off documents produced by the team, taking into consideration any legal issues, source protection and other risks.
• Provide strategic direction and oversight for project teams and individual investigators to help guide investigative and research work in pursuit of strategic campaign objectives on climate.
• Help develop and implement systems and processes which ensure the team maintains high standards of investigative research and campaign outcomes.
• Represent the Investigations team and ARIA to the GSCC network and manage requests for support from colleagues.
• Build alliances and relationships with the global community of investigators, researchers, campaigners and journalists who work in this space, working with this community to help develop and implement new initiatives;
• Contribute to the development of a broader vision of how investigative research and rich storytelling can support global communications activities on climate, energy and related causes.
• Manage a fast paced diverse workload.

Our ideal candidate has
• Experience of managing a small team
• Experience of overseeing complex investigations or research projects as part of a media organisation, campaign organisation or similar.
• Ability to produce clear, well-sourced and accurate briefings and summaries, or news articles.
• Experience of editing, fact checking, source protection and security risks associated with investigations and their publication.
• A demonstrable understanding of libel in relation to conducting and publishing investigations
• Evidence of the ability to think strategically about how investigations can support campaign objectives.
• Experience of pitching stories to the media and/ or collaborating with media organisations on complex stories.
• Experience of conducting and overseeing high risk cross-border investigations and field trips is an advantage
• Working knowledge of other languages besides English an advantage.
• Previous experience of investigating industrial sectors that contribute to the climate problem, and/or the transport sector, would be an advantage;
• Experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, including vulnerable groups.
• Fluency in written and spoken English, our working language; additional languages are an asset.
• A genuine interest in and passion for addressing climate change.
• The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.
• The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack and email (Google Workspace).
• A commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change.
