Supporting over 1,300 births and impacting over 46,000 lives throughout Uganda since 2008, Shanti Uganda’s proven model of success is poised to scale to impact more women and girls throughout Uganda. The Shanti Uganda Birth House is a solar powered maternity center on one acre of land in the Luwero District of Uganda. The Birth House provides mother-centered care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period and acts as a community hub from which Shanti Uganda runs family planning education, prenatal education, prenatal yoga, a Community Garden Program, Teen Health Workshops, and new Postpartum Home Outreach program.

Job Summary: The Development Officer will work closely with Shanti’s international team (based both in Canada and Uganda) to research and execute grants and endowments for Shanti Uganda’s operations from a variety of sources including: governments, foundations, and corporate partners. The Development Officer will strengthen Shanti’s sustainable funding model by increasing the number and depth of partnerships, particularly within Uganda. The Development Officer will report to the Country Director and work closely with the Executive Director, Country Director, and the Program Manager (in charge of programs and monitoring and evaluation) to collaborate on high quality grant applications. The Development Officer will enhance evidence-based, holistic programs that improve maternal and infant health by securing regular, in-kind donations for medical and lab supplies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The jobholder will research grants and endowments both internationally and within Uganda from government, foundation, and corporate sources
  •  Collaborate on grant proposals with full Shanti team, including grant writing, budgeting, and planning
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships with potential funders within Uganda
  • Secure in-kind donation partners for medical and practical needs of the organization
  •  Maintain ongoing communication history and reporting requirements in partnership and funding database
  • Attend meetings with Ministry of Health at the district and national levels with the goal to increase government funding and partnerships
  •  Prepare organizational background presentations for prospective donor meetings
  •  Organize two major Shanti Uganda fundraising events in Uganda
  •  Support the vision, mission, and values of Shanti Uganda
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the Global Health Corps Development Officer career placement should hold a Bachelor’s degree in community development, global health, or other related field
  • At least two years of experience drafting strong grant proposals, including budgeting components
  • Experience planning events, including coordinating logistics
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and ideally Google docs
  • Exceptional communications skills in written and spoken English*
  •  Experience working with a range of donors, including governments, multilateral agencies, corporate partners, and foundations, especially in Uganda
  •  Experience fundraising for a small grassroots organization
  • Exceptional independent research and analytical skills
  •  Ability to handle multiple projects at once/respond to changing priorities
  •  Ability to work independently, with good judgment and confidence
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  •  Ability to network and foster lasting relationships
  •  Deep passion for women’s health and empowerment
  •  Experience working with an international organization and a cross-cultural team
  • Knowledge of the health systems/landscape within Uganda

Fellowship Stipend, Benefits, and Logistics:
In addition to the intensive leadership development and professional growth that the fellowship offers, the Global Health Corps fellowship includes the following benefits.   • Monthly living stipend of $550
  •  Award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year

  •  Travel costs covered to and from placement site, GHC training and retreats
  • Professional development funds of up to $600
