JOB DETAILS:
Job/Role Purpose:
The Early Childhood Development and Parenting Specialist will support the identification, design and coordination of the health ECD programme by working with parent groups and children between 0-5 in Bid Bidi Settlement in Yumbe with a focus on parenting interventions, parent led actions research, Social and behavioural Change, Psycho Socio Support, mental health, Nutrition and WASH.
Task Responsibilities
• Identification and landscape analysis of ECD and parenting interventions in Bidi-Bidi refugee camp: identification of current actors and programmes, stakeholders, referral pathways, parental support systems and relevant social services.
• Identification of recent child survival interventions and scope - determine the focus on the parenting interventions (secondary data analysis, and policy analysis).
• Design, and coordinate a participatory action research - Parent-led action research identified critical needs of the most vulnerable families in terms of health, nutrition, WASH, ECD and mental health.
• Work with the health programme manager to conduct an intersectional vulnerability analysis - explicit to the needs of minoritized families (teenage mums, PWDs, intersections)
• Identification and local adaptation of most appropriate parenting group model and methodology (e.g. Care groups or Parenting groups)
• Adapt and/or develop training component with IEC materials for the National Parenting Guidelines.
• Conduct a stakeholder consultation, review and adaptation of tools
• Training facilitators of the parenting group using a derived care-group or similar methodology.
Other Duties
Fulfil other appropriate level responsibilities as defined by the line manager from time to time.
Abide by VSO core values and other VSO policies regarding, Safeguarding, Gender Sensitivity, Child Protection, Data Protection Act, Anti-Bribery, Confidentiality and Security.

• Like minded partners in the Settlement especially the Health Leads IRC
• Multiple VSO project teams as appropriate
Competence required
Essential:
Qualifications:
• At least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as public health, maternal and child health, nursing, or early childhood development.
Experience:
• At least three years’ experience in early childhood development programming
• At least 3 years’ experience of implementing social behavior change interventions in communities.
• At least 1 year of designing and implementing parenting interventions for caregivers of infants aged 0-3 years.
• Prior experience of the development of curricula or training materials using adult learning methodologies
Skills:
• Knowledge or training in mental health and psychosocial support methodologies
• Knowledge and awareness of Uganda’s ECD policies and programmes
• Demonstrated ability to effectively convene, coordinate and communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders and identifying their needs and using their own voice to express their priorities.
• Excellent organisational skills.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Excellent written and communication skills especially when explaining complex concepts to audiences of different levels.
