Job Summary:
The midwife is responsible for providing emotional support and guidance before, during and after labor. She/he will identify high-risk pregnancies and educate patients and their families on antenatal care and reproductive health. She/he will attend to women and babies during the postnatal period and refer complication cases to the medical clinical officer. They conduct a clean, safe delivery, give care to the newborn, and manage/refer emergencies effectively to prevent maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity.
• Supervisee and assist mothers during the antenatal period, monitoring the condition of the fetus, and using their knowledge to identify early signs of complications.
• Ensure clients’ records are kept to help in the continuity of care easier and to enable identify problems in an early stage.
• Develop birth plan and promote the concept of birth preparedness and advice on a complicated situation so that it will help mothers to take decisions.
• Provide information about all kinds of family planning methods and help couples to take an informed decision.
• Provide information and counsel pregnant women on prenatal self-care including nutrition, hygiene, breastfeeding, and danger signs in pregnancy and childbirth.
• Provide high quality, culturally sensitive health education to promote healthy, helpful family life, and positive parenting.
• Manage all the circumstances where appropriate, recognize and refer women to obstetricians and other specialists at a time when necessary.
• Provide high quality antenatal and postnatal care to maximize the women’s health during and after pregnancy, detect problems early and manage or refer for any complications.
• Review patient history, diagnostics, and lab data, and report any abnormalities
• Monitoring, reporting, and recording symptoms or changes in patient conditions.
• In-charge of EPI programs in the health facility and participate in child health days.
• Maintain a safe, hygienic working environment
• Any other duty assigned by the supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
The qualified candidate should have a Certificate in midwifery from a recognized institution, a valid practicing license with Uganda National Nursing Council, with at least:
• 2 years’ experience in a health care related field preferably in a refugee setting.
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of professionalism while executing his/her duties.
• Strong critical thinking skills and dedicated to provide the best patient care possible.
• Strong observational skills
• Fluency in the local languages such as Kakwa, Madi, Arabic and Lugbara is preferable
• Ability and willingness to live and stay within Ofua trading centre in Rhino Camp for ease of access to the health facility
