Summary:
The African Crane Conservation Programme (ACCP), a partnership between the International Crane Foundation and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, aims to maintain stable wild populations of the four threatened crane species resident to sub-Saharan Africa: Wattled, Blue, Grey Crowned, and Black Crowned Cranes. Moving towards the ICFIEWT strategic vision for 2025, conservation efforts will be intensified in southwestern and southcentral Uganda for the conservation of Grey Crowned Cranes. The Uganda project works to fulfill the requirements for securing and improving the ecological integrity of key sites for cranes in south western and southcentral Uganda in collaboration with local communities and key stakeholders and monitoring and threat mitigation for Grey Crowned Cranes in the areas.
The International Crane Foundation, registered in Uganda as an International Non-Governmental Organization, is looking or a dynamic, committed and confident Ugandan with passion, integrity and innovation to fill the position of Field Research Assistant. The person will be responsible for searching for cranes and recording all sightings, including breeding, flocking, foraging, and roosting sites in Southwestern and Southcentral Uganda. The person will also assist in the implementation of ICFIEWT Partnership projects initially focusing in the Rukiga District.
Field based; the position will report into our Field Officer in Southcentral Uganda. Although focused on Southwestern Uganda, the person will be expected to identify and map crane sites in other regions of Uganda. We are an equal opportunity employer and hence consider gender equality. .
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
• Using a motorbike, cover key parts of southwestern and Southcentral Uganda in search of cranes, record all sightings, including breeding, flocking, foraging, and roosting sites.
• At each site, sensitize communities on cranes and their threats, raising awareness across the region.
• Gain an Understanding of community perceptions towards cranes and the environment.
• Collect baseline data on cranes, wetlands, and communities, and follow data collection protocols to monitor impact over time.
• Assist, where relevant, the mitigation of the threat of crane trade and powerline collisions, or any other threats that are identified.
• Assist field staff as required to implement elements of our projects that take an integrated approach to conservation through appropriate and relevant partnerships, incorporating a rights-based approach to family planning, improving human health and livelihood development both at a landscape level and through Conservation Agreements.
• Maintain good relationships with both the local government authorities and local con1munities to promote mutual trust and strong program-stakeholder relationships.
• Assist with monitoring and liaison with Crane Custodians to gather field data for monitoring and reporting of project activities.
• Participate in the drafting of project work plans, budgets, and technical reports.
Preferred Experience and Skill Sets
• Applicants for this position should have experience in:
• Field data collection, collation, and cleaning.
• Planning and coordinating community awareness campaigns
• Community based natural resource management.
• Ability to ride a motorbike.
• Willingness to travel extensively across Southwestern and Southcentral Uganda.
Required Qualifications
• A bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Management, Wildlife Management, Biological Sciences, Science
• Education or related fields.
• Good communication skills
• Ability to facilitate community-based workshops and training.
• Computer skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.).
• Proven ability to work in a team and facilitate work of other experts in the field.
• Good command of oral and written English.
• Good time management and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to respond positively to feedback and differing points of view.
• Willingness to work in remote areas.
• Ability to maintain good team discipline and motivation.
