JOB DETAILS:
Introduction and background:
The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), launched in 2011, is a broad alliance of civil society actors who are part of the struggle for food sovereignty and agroecology in Africa. These actors include African food producer networks, African CSO networks, indigenous people’s organizations, faith-based organizations, women and youth groups, consumer movements, and international organizations that support the stance of AFSA. It is a network of networks, currently with 40 active members in 50 African countries.
The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Food Systems Coordinator to oversee and coordinate various projects aimed at transforming African food systems towards sustainability. This role will involve significant responsibility in managing the "My Food is African" project, the Congo Basin Food Systems Initiatives, and other AU policy-related processes. The successful candidate will also act as a liaison staff for the Citizen Working Group, facilitating the work of the Working Group.

Key Responsibilities:
Project Coordination and Management:
• Oversee and coordinate the implementation of the programs and projects within the Citizen working group including but not limited to the "My Food is African" project.
• Manage and provide technical support for AU food policy-related processes.
• Ensure alignment of objectives of sustainable food systems and relevant policies with AFSA Strategic Plan.
• Manage multi-country projects, coordinating activities across different regions and ensuring effective collaboration among stakeholders.

Strategic support:
• Provide strategic support for the Citizen Working Group, ensuring effective engagement and collaboration.
• Develop and implement strategies to advance AFSA’s objectives in transforming African food systems.
• Facilitate the integration of citizen perspectives into policy and project frameworks at country and continual levels.

Liaison and Networking:
• Act as the primary liaison between AFSA secretariat and the Citizen Working Group.
• Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, and community groups.
• Represent AFSA in relevant forums, conferences, and meetings.

Policy and Advocacy:
• Contribute to the development and dissemination of policy briefs, research reports, and advocacy materials.
• Facilitate the development of key policy communication material, including materials for input to social media.
• Engage with policymakers and stakeholders to promote sustainable food systems and advocate for policy changes.

Monitoring and Evaluation:
• Monitor and evaluate project outcomes, ensuring objectives are met and identifying areas for improvement.
• Prepare regular progress reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Team Leadership and Capacity Building:
• Provide guidance and support to project teams and partners.
• Facilitate capacity-building initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of team members and partners.

Fundraising and Donor Relations Management:
• Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure financial support for the Citizen Working Group’s projects and activities.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with current and potential donors, including government agencies, foundations, and private sector partners.
• Prepare grant proposals, reports, and other documentation required by donors.
• Organize and manage fundraising events and campaigns to support the Citizen Working Group’s objectives

Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
• Master’s degree in agriculture, Environmental Science, Development Studies, Public Policy, Law, or a related field from a reputable University.

Experience:
• Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in working with reputable organisations in similar field of food systems, food/agriculture policy work, or related fields in Africa
• Proven experience in managing multi-country projects, with a track record of successful coordination and collaboration across different countries/regions.

Skills and Competencies:
• In-depth knowledge of African food systems and sustainability issues.
• Proven experience in project management and strategic support.
• Strong networking and liaison skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French (added advantage).
• Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
• Skills in social media

Preferred Language
English. Understanding of French is an added advantage
