JOB DETAILS:

POSITION : HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT/NURSING AID
REPORTS TO : TEAM LEADER, UNIT MANAGER
INTERFACES WITH: MEDICAL AND OTHER STAFF/PATIENTS

OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
• To assist in patient care and other ward-related duties as directed by, and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in the unit.
• He/she will work closely with the team of qualified nursing staff to ensure continuity of patient care.
• Keep up-to-date with ward, and hospital developments and changes.
• Adhere to hospital policies and protocols.
• Learn and update new skills as necessary, work-based training, e.g. manual handling, Work in accordance with organizational policy, procedures and strategy.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES
• Certificate of training as a nursing assistant
• Previous experience as a Nursing Auxiliary within the hospital setting, or in a Care Home.
• Good interpersonal skills. Able to perform personal care for patients. Can read and write and is able to document care to a good standard.
• Pleasant personality, ability to work well in a team, has high level of commitment and flexible.
• Good communication skill and ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team

GENERAL PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
• Closely work with trained nurses to ensure patients receive the best care whilst in hospital- keeping an eye onpatients; reporting any changes to the qualified staff on duty.
• Assist in delivering a high standard of holistic care to patients, promoting their equality and dignity at all times.
• Maintain confidentiality of patients. Be mindful of and respect patient's individuality - physical, emotional andspiritual well-being.
• Perform and report clinical observation of a patient’s temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, andoxygen saturation, is able to recognize changes in a patient's condition and to report these to the qualifiednurse or shift in-charge.
• Complete the patients' records of care as appropriate (e.g. record of observation taken).
• Perform basic life support, and give assistance to professionals during advanced life-support techniques.
• Assist in the maintenance of ward cleanliness; ensure a safe environment for the staff, patient, and visitors.
• Have a basic knowledge of infection control and help to prevent cross infection.
• Prepare and restore environments for clinical procedures.
• Ensure safe storage of patients' belongings and valuables.
• Report any faulty/unsafe equipment to trained staff.
• Assist in the maintenance of stock levels, able to identify stock shortages and report this to the ward in-charge.
• Undertake a patient’s basic admission procedure in preparation for professional assessment.
• Give formal verbal hand-over of patient care to the qualified staff and participate in bedside handovers.
• Assist in last-office procedure, and provide support for the family and/or friends.
• Answer telephone and direct all enquiries to the trained staff.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Help with changing/moving patients, changing beds, answering phones, cleaning etc; observe safe moving & handling techniques.
• Be prepared to sit with, support, read to, and write letters for patients who require this care.
• Assist with patient hygiene, elimination, and mobility, physical comfort, eating and drinking, whilst observing and reporting specific changes.
• Assist qualified nursing staff by giving basic care, taking vital signs, administering hygienic care, assist with patient feeding, simple dressing, giving basic psychosocial care, housekeeping, and similar duties (such as cleaning stool and urine).
• Obtain urine, stool and sputum specimens as instructed by a senior nurse,
• Transport blood, blood products and specimens to and from the laboratory.
• Empty urine catheter bags when full
• Undertake simple dressings and obtain wound swab.
• Remove sutures.
• Attach patients to cardiac monitors and obtain a reading.
• Prepare patients physically for investigation, anaesthesia, surgery and specialist interventions.
• Escort patients to and from relevant departments including the operating department with the joint agreement of the health care assistant, senior staff nurse on the ward and Team leader in Theatre.
