JOB DETAILS:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Ensures that all material necessary for rearing insect colonies is prepared properly and on time.
• Responsible for all aspects of insect colony tasks, such as daily maintenance and mass rearing of mosquitoes under controlled insectary conditions following standard insectary rearing procedures, diet and reagent preparation, egg collection, weekly production setup, insect staging, sanitation of materials, cleaning and maintenance of insectary equipment, and handling of various mosquito life stages (eggs, aquatic stages, adults). Collect and collate various
• insectary and laboratory data and Compiles and records information, sometimes using computers into established data storage systems.
• Receive field samples of mosquitoes, sort and identify these to species using morphological keys and microscopic
• methods.
• Maintain records of insectary stocks, including history of lines, assist with batching and biobanking activities and organizing shipping and transportation of samples to field sites.
• Assist with training of staff in insectary and laboratory activities.
• Keep abreast of developments, activities and protocols in area of expertise through liaison with staff and peers, reading relevant literature and attending meetings and seminars.
• Comply with project policy, procedures and protocols relevant to maintaining insects in the facility.
• Assists with miscellaneous tasks such as cleaning, handling, packaging and storing facility supplies/materials/equipment. Operates and maintains complex equipment in support of experiments conducted within a research project.
• May write experimental reports, summaries and protocols.
• Other duties as directed by the supervisor

Job Qualifications
The following are required:

• Minimum of High School Diploma in biological sciences with substantial relevant skills and work experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
• High Interest in insect's biology including mosquito life cycle and general insectary rearing Techniques and biological systems. A demonstrated understanding of confidentiality, privacy and information handling principles.

Skills
• Ability to read, understand and follow protocols
• Ability to work additional hours,
• occasionally on weekends and during peak periods of work during which times taking of leave may be restricted. Communication skills, including the ability to draft a range of documentation, interact with a diversity of colleagues, clients and maintain discretion.
• Demonstrate high-level organizational skills.
• A high level of computer literacy, including demonstrated experience in learning
• and adopting new Software packages as required.

The following are preferred:
• Associates or Bachelor's in Entomology
• Insect rearing experience
• Experience caring for animals and creatures
• Experience working in a lab environment
